Shestartedbyemailing20localdesigners.“Iwrote,‘Youdon’tknowme.Butmyhearthurtsafterseeingtheserooms.’”shesaid.ShethenaskedwhethertheywoulddonatetheirtimeandmoneytotransformjustoneofDr.Hufford’sroomseach.
Asithappens,sixofthemwrotebackalmostimmediately.Sixroomsgotnewpaint,lightfixtures,artwork,andfurniture.Dr.Huffordwasdelighted.“Allthepatientsfeelthereliefofthepainbecauseofit,”hesaid.Heevennotedthathisownvoicewasdifferentintheroomsandthathewasbetterabletoconnectwithhispatients.
Ballardwassoencouragedbythepatients’reactionthatshecreatedanon-profitorganization,RoomsThatRockChemo,toraisemoneyanddecoratemorespaces.Sincethen,shehasworkedon20projects,includingoneinPennsylvania.“WewereinPhiladelphiaforanopeningceremony,andawomanwasthereonherthirdbattlewithcancer,”saysBallard.“Whenshesawwhatwe’ddone,shesaid,‘I’mgonnabeatitthistime.IthoughtIwasn’tgoingto,butnowI’mgonnabeatit.’”

HongleiChen,adoctorwithMichiganStateUniversityinEastLansing,Michigan,wastheleadauthorofthereportonthestudy.Hesaidtheconnectionbetweenapoorsenseofsmellandanincreasedriskofdyingwaslimitedtoadultswhofirstreportedgoodorexcellenthealth.Thissuggeststhatapoorsenseofsmellisanearlyandsensitivesignofworseninghealthbeforeitisrecognizableinmedicaltests.Withapoorsenseofsmell,peoplearemorelikelytodieofbrainandheartdiseases,butnotofcancerorbreathingproblems.
