Afriendofminewhotravelswidelyalwaystriestolearnalittleofthelanguageofanyplaceshevisits.She’snotmuchofalinguist,butshedoesknowhowtosayoneword-“beautiful”-inseverallanguages.Shecanuseittoamotherholdingherbaby,ortolonelysalesmanfishingoutpicturesofhisfamily.Theabilityhasearnedherfriendsallovertheworld.

It’sstrangehowcharyweareaboutpraising.Perhapsit’sbecausefewofusknowhowtoacceptcomplimentsgracefully.Instead,weareembarrassedandshrugoffthewordswearereallysogladtohear.Becauseofthisdefensivereaction,directcomplimentsaresurprisinglydifficulttogive.Thatiswhysomeofthemostvaluedpatsonthebackarethosewhichcometousindirectly,inaletterorpassedonbyafriend.Whenonethinksofthespeedwithwhichspitefulremarksareconveyed,itseemsapitythatthereisn’tmoreefforttorelaypleasingandflatteringcomments.

It’sespeciallyrewardingtogivepraiseinareasinwhicheffortgenerallygoesunnoticedorunmentioned.Anartistgetscomplimentedforagloriouspicture,acookforaperfectmeal.Butdoyouevertellyoulaundrymanagerhowpleasedyouarewhentheshirtsaredonejustright?
