1.情态动词的推测用法
许多情态动词用来表示推测,从最不肯定到最肯定,所表达的可能性,从小到大顺序大抵如下:
might
may很不肯定
could
can
canshouldberight,
oughttohavebeenright,
would
will
must几乎可以肯定

掌握这个表对于我们正确运用情态动词来表达“可能性”这个概念是有帮助的。
例如,当你手拿一大串钥匙去开门,但你不知道究竟哪一把钥匙能够把门打开,于是你试第一把,你说:
“Itmight/maybethekeytothedoor.”;几乎所有的钥匙都试过了,恰好都不能把门打开,最后只剩下两把,你再试,你就可以说:
“Itmustbethekey.”
Thedirectorsofacorporationmightormightnotholdsharesinthecorporation.董事不一定就是该公司股东。

can可以用来表示:
A)能力(ability):
HecanrunfasterthanI.他能跑得比我快。

B.允许(permission):

我们现在可以停止工作了吗?

你开车时越小心越好。

Youcan’tbetoocarefulwhenyoudriveacar.里的can,用的正是这一含义,该句相当于It’simpossiblethatyouaretoocarefulwhenyoudriveacar.即:
“你开车时太小心这种情况是不可能的。
”
句型cannot/never/hardly…too/enough…表达强烈的肯定,常常一译成“越……越好”,“再……也不过分”。
例如:

最后,can表示“可能性”时,隐含sometimes的意思:

3.could和was/wereableto
两者都用来表示能力和学到的技能:
Hecould/wasabletodriveacarwhenhewastenyearsold.他十岁就会驾车。
Aftertenmonths’studyhecould/wasabletoreadnewspaperinEnglish.经过十个月的学习,他就能够读疑问报纸了.
但could倾向于经过长期训练而获得的能力,而was/wereableto则表示经过努力成功地做成事情:
Finallywewereabletoreachthedestinationbeforedark./Finallywesucceededinreachingthedestination.我们终于在天黑前到达了目的地。
Iwenttherein1984,andthatwastheonlyoccasionwhenI____thejourneyinexactlytwodays.
A)mustmakeB)musthavemadeC)wasabletomakeD)couldmake

我1984年去过那里,但只有那一次我正好用2天完成整个行程。

大火迅速蔓延到整个旅馆,但玫瑰人都逃出来了。
4.must
must的否定有多种形式。
当must表示肯定的推测时,其否定通常用cannot/can’t:
“Shemustbethirtybynow.”“她现在必定有三十岁了”
“Shecan’tbethirty.Hermotherisonlyforty.”“她不可能有三十岁,她的母亲才四十岁。
”
“ShemusthavelearnedEnglishforyearsbeforeshewentabroad.”
“ShecannothavelearnedEnglishforyears.Shehadbeenlivinginaremotevillagebythen.”
“她出国前一定学过多年英语。
”“她不可能学过多年英语,那时候她生活在一个遥远的村子里。
”
但也有人(特别是在美国英语里)用mustnot/mustn’t表达同样的意思。
以下两例摘自C.E.EckersleyandJ.M.Eckersley的AComprehensiveEnglishGrammar(P.203)
Mr.Greenmustn’thavereceivedmyletter,otherwisehewouldhaverepliedbeforenow.格林先生不可能收到我的信,不然的话,她早就给我回信了。
IcanheartheBrowns’phonebellringbutnooneisansweringit;theymustn’tbeathome.我听见布朗家电话铃响,但没人接,他们一定不在家。
当must作“必要、有义务”讲时,其否定是neednot/needn’t:
Youneedn’thandinthereportbuttheymust.你不必交报告,但他们必须交。
“Mustwebetheretenminutesearlier?
”
“No,youneedn’t.Pleasebethereontime.”
“我们必须提前十分种到达那儿吗?
”“不必。
请准时到那儿。
”
mustn’t/mustnot表示“禁止”:
Youmustn’tsmokeintheclassroom.不许在教室里抽烟。
5.haveto和must
haveto和must都作“必须”讲,但用must时,其强制性来自说话人;而用haveto时,其强制性来自外部环境。
例如:
Tellhimthathemustbeherebynine.Iinsistonit.告诉他,他必须九点钟之前到这里。
我坚持要这样。
Sheseesbadly;shehastowearsglassesallthetime.她视力很差,不得不整天戴着眼镜。
Whenatyreispuncturedthedriverhastochangethewheel.轮胎被刺穿时,司机就得换车轮。
6.may/mightaswell
表示“因为没有更好、更有趣或更有用的事可做,就做某事”:
Ifyoudon’tliketoswim,you_____stayathome.

7.be+to不定式
这一结构中be可看作半助动词,用来表示:
A.计划或安排:
Aninvestigationistobemadenextweek.下周将进行调查。
Iamtomeethimattheairportthisafternoon.下午我到机场去接他。
SirDenis,whois78,hasmadeitknownthatmuchofhiscollection_______tothenation.
A)hasleftB)istoleaveC)leavesD)istobeleft
(B4,1996.6-14,D对)78岁的丹尼斯爵士已经向众人宣布她的许多收藏品将留给国家。
在报纸标题中,be常常略去以节省篇幅:
(The)PrimeMinister(Is)toMake(a)StatementTomorrow.首相将于明天了表一项声明。
(The)King(is)toVisitJapanNextWeek.国王下周访日。
be也可用过去时,表示曾经有过的计划;如果这个计划没有实现,不定式用完成式:
Thenextmorninghewastostartforthewesttomakehisfortune.他计划第二天早上动身到西部去发财致富。
Thestudentsweretohaveassembledattheauditoriumbefore9a.m.,butthelecturewascancelledatthelastminute.学生们原打算九点前在礼堂集中,可是报告在最后一刻取消了。
Thehousewastohavebeenreadytodaybutastherehasbeenabuilders’strike,itisstillhalffinished.房子本来计划今天完工,可是由于建筑工人罢工,这房子现在只盖了一半。
Hismarewastohaverunintomorrow’sracebuthesaidthismorningthatshewassickandwouldn’tberunningafterall.他的马本来要参加明天的比赛,可是他今天早上说马病了,不能跑了。
B.表示命令和要求。
例如:
Nobodyistoleavethishousewithoutthepermissionofthepolice.未经警察允许,任何人不得离开这所房子。
Youaretostayhereuntilreturn.在我回来之前你得呆在这里。
吩咐注意事项时,to不定式的被动式是很常见的:
Blackskinwastobedisguisedatallcosts.黑皮肤一定要不惜任何代价掩饰起来。
ThehomeworkistobehandedinbeforeFriday.家庭作业星期五前交。
在表达注意事项的这种结构里,主语和be都可能省略:
(Thismedicineis)Tobetakenfourtimesadayaftermeals.(此药)一日四次,饭后服用。
(写在药瓶上)
(Thischemicalis)Tobekeptoutofthereachofchildren.勿让儿童接触(此化学药品)。
C.表示一种隐藏于未来之中的事,这种事不是事先安排好的。
例如:
Whentheboywasborninthelogcabin,hismotherlittlethoughtthathewasonedaytomoveintotheWhiteHouse.他母亲在小木屋生下这男孩时,没有想到他将来有一天会入主白宫。
AdecadelaterhisEuropeantravelsweretobethesubjectofhisfirstliterarybook.十年后,他的欧洲之行成了他第一部文学作品的主题。
D.表示“应该”或“可能”等。
如:
Somebooksaretobetasted,otherstobeswallowedandsomefewtobechewedanddigested.(FrancisBacon)书有可浅尝者,有可吞食者,少数则须咀嚼消化。
Alltruthsarenottobetold.并不是所有真理都可用语言道破。
Suchbooksarenowheretobefound.哪儿也找不到这样的书。
Notasoulwastobeseeninthedarkstreet.黑乎乎的街上连个人影也看不见。
E.在if从句中表示真实条件或虚拟条件。
例如:
Ifwearetobeatthetopofthemountainbytwelveo’clock,wemuststartoutnow.如果我们想在十二点到达山顶,现在就得出发了。
Ifyouweretoattendthebanquet,whatwouldyouwear?

8.beabout+to不定式
这一结构表示即将发生的事:
IwasabouttoleavetheworkshopwhenIheardmynamecalled.我正要离开车间,忽然听见有人叫我的名字。
Tomconsidered,andwasabouttoconsent;buthechangedhismind.汤姆想了想,正要表示同意,却又改变了主意。
Astheywereabouttofallasleep,anunknownvisitorcame.他们正要入睡,来了一位不速之客。
9.“情态动词+动词的完成式”的用法
1)should/oughtto+动词的完成式
表示“本来应该......而实际上没有”,含“责备、惋惜”等语气,”例如:
Tom_____betterthantoaskDickforhelp.
A.shouldknowB.shouldn'tknow
C.hasknownD.shouldhaveknown
(B6,1991.6,答案是D)汤姆本来就应当懂得不该请狄克来帮忙。

)你本应该给詹姆斯写信,然而,你没写。
“wouldloveto/wouldliketo+动词的完成式”也表示类似的意思:

(1997年高考试题,B对)昨晚我本想参加聚会的,可是为了完成那份报告,不得不加班。
2)must+动词的完成式
表示对已经发生了的事情的肯定的推测。
例如:
Thecityatonetimemusthavebeenprosperous,foritenjoyedahighlevelofcivilization.(NewconceptEnglish,Book2,L.3)这个城市一定曾经非常繁荣,因为它享
