In1789theU.S.governmentpassedalawwhichsaidthatthelandoftheAmericanIndianscouldneverbetakenfromthenwithouttheiragreement.Onehundredyearslater,however,theIndiansonlyhadaverysmallpartofthelandthatoriginallybelongedtothem.Howdidthisgreatinjustice(不公正)occur?
After1812whitesettlersbegantomovewestacrossNorthAmerica.Atfirst,thesettlersandtheIndianslivedinpeace.However,thenumberofsettlersincreasedgreatlyeveryyear,andslowlytheIndiansbegantoseethewhitesettlersasadangertotheirsurvival.Tofeedthemselves,thesettlerskilledmoreandmorewildanimals.TheIndians,whodependedontheseanimalsforfood,hadtostruggleagainststarvation.Thesettlersalsobroughtwiththemmanydiseaseswhichwerecommoninwhitesociety,butwhichwerenewfortheIndians.GreatnumbersofIndiansbecamesickanddied.Between1843and1854theIndianpopulationinoneareaofthecountrywentdownfrom100,000to30,000.
Morelandwasneededfortheincreasingnumberofwhitesettlers.InWashington,theoldrespectfortherightsoftheIndiansdisappeared.TheoldpromisestotheIndianswerebroken;thegovernmentbegantomovegroupsofIndiansfromtheiroriginalhomelandstootherpoorerpartsofthecountry.SomeIndiansreactedangrilyandviolentlytothistreatment.
