Thisisafast-temposociety,everybodyhasanestablishedtimescheduleandlivesinhisownworld.Itisloveandcommunicationthatcombinesourdifferentworldstogether.However,aswespendtoomuchtimechasingourgoalsanddreams,wehaveignoredthepartnersandfriendsaroundusmoreorless.Sothatoneday,whenwesuddenlypauseandthink,wefindourselvesgettinglostinthehumancrowd.

AfterreadingDaddy-Long-Legs,Iamforcedtostopandrethink,andsavemyselfoutoftheconfusingcrowd.WhenIwasyoung,Ireadalotofromanticfairytales,andhavebuildedupawonderfulfictitiousworldinmymind.However,whenIgraduallygrowupandenterthesociety,therealworldappearstobecompletelydifferentfromwhatIhavethought.Hence,Ifeelveryupsetaboutthefraudulenttales,andbegintorefusethedeceptivesocialintercourse.Thisattitudehashelpedmetomaintainapureheart,butmeanwhiledrivedtheloveandfriendshipawayfromme.Asaresult,I’vealwaysbeenalone.SoalthoughIstudyveryhardandobtaingoodgrades,I’mnothappyatall,mylifehasbeenfilledwithdepressionandcoldnessforalongperiod.ItisDaddy-Long-Legsthatmakesmebelieveinloveandmiraclesagain.

Justlikethefairytales,thisstoryisveryromanticandbeautiful,too.However,astherearenoprincessorbeast,thisnovelismoreclosetoourreallife.Itisaboutanorphanwhoissohumorousandhardworkingthatshefinallygainshertruelove.

JudyAbbottwastheheroineofthewholebook,shewasbroughtupatanold-fashionedasylum.Whenshewasyoung,shehadtowhollydependonthecharityandwearotherpeople’scast-offclothes,thismakesherveryself-contemptuous.Nevertheless,themiserablefactdoesn’tsweepawayhergoodsenseofhumor,onthecontrary,itgivesheraspecialabilitytoexpressherfeelingsinafunnyway.

Oneday,Judyisinformedbytheasylum’sdourmatronthatoneofthetrusteeshasofferedtosendhertocollege.ThismysteriousmanbelievesthatJudyhaspotentialtobecomeanexcellentwriter,hedecidestopayhertuitionfeesandgivesheragenerousmonthlyallowance.Hedoesn’taskforanythanksorrepayment,butrequiresJudytowritehimamonthlylettertopractiseherwritingskills.However,Judywillneverknowhisrealidentity;shemustaddresstheletterstoMr.JohnSmith,andhewillneverreply.

Judycatchesaglimpseoftheshadowofherbenefactor,andknowsheisatallman.Becauseofthis,shejokinglycallshim“Daddy-Long-Legs”。

Later,Judyattendsawomen’scollege,andbeginstowriteletterstohertrustee.Assheisgoodatdescribinganecdoteswithchildlikelinedrawings,herlettersappeartobeinterestingandmeaningful.Afterwards,JudygetsstuckintheaffectionentanglementwithJervie,thismakesherextremelyconfused.ShetriestoconsultherDaddy-Long-Legsandfinallysucceeds.However,whenshemeetsthesecretman,miraclehappens.ShefindsthatJervie,themanshereallyloves,isDaddy-Long-Legs,whohasalwayssupportedherasarelative.Thenthestorycomestoanhappyending,theygetmarriedandliveahappylife.

Ilovethisstorybecauseitdemonstratesanidealworldwhichisfullofkindnessandwarmth,althoughthereisahugegapbetweenthemainroles.Itshowsthatmiraclesdohappentothosewhoarealwayshopeful.Sonomatterhowbitterthelifeis,weshouldneverloseourfaith,wemustbelievethattomorrowwillbebetter.Lifeisalongwayfilledwithmisfortuneandadversity,weshouldlearntoconfrontitbravely.Becausewhenweshedtearsformissingthesun,weshallalsomissthestars.

WhenJudyisintheorphanage,sheisallaloneintheworldandalmostdoesn’thaveanythingbelongtoher,butshestillliveshappilywithoptimism.ComparedwithJudy,today’sadolescentsaremuchmorefragile.TakeaglanceatthenewspapersandTVprogrammes,youmaynotbesurprisedtofindsomanyyoungsterscommittingsuicide,becauseitisjusttoocommonintoday’ssociety.Thisrevealsthattoday’syoungpeoplearetoopessimisticandhopeless,thustheywon’ttreasuretheirlifeseriously.Thisproblemisquitealarmingamongthepoorstudentsfromthecountryside,sincetheyhavetofacemoreobstaclesandbarriers,theyaremorestressfulthantheirpeers.Forexample,lastyearacollegegirlwhonamedLiuweiendedherlifebecauseoftheunbearablefinancialpressure.Asaresult,itisquiteurgentforthesocietytoshowtheirlovingcaretothedisadvantagedgroup.
