Outcamethefourcrocks,spilledtheirheavylip

Thestaff,likeagreatwhiskeymuddlerfashioned
indealwood,wasplungedin,thelidfitted.
Mymothertookfirstturn,setuprhythms
that,sluggedandthumpedforhours.Armsached.
Handsblistered.Cheeksandclotheswerespattered
withflabbymilk.
Wherefinallygoldflecks
begantodance.Theypouredhotwaterthen,
sterilizedabirchwoodbowl
andlittlecorrugatedbutter-spades.
Theirshortstrokequickened,suddenly
ayellowcurdwasweightingthechurned-upwhite,
heavyandrich,coagulatedsunlight
thattheyfished,dripping,inawidetinstrainer,
heapeduplikegildedgravelinthebowl.
Thehousewouldstinklongafterchurningday,
acridasasulphurmine.Theemptycrocks
wererangedalongthewallagain,thebutter
insoftprintedslabswaspiledonpantryshelves.
Andinthehousewemovedwithgravidease,
ourbrainsturnedcrystalsfullofcleandealchurns,
theplashandgurgleofthesour-breathedmilk,
thepatandslapofsmallspadesonwetlumps.
