1.TheImportanceofEnglish

Therearethousandsoflanguagesintheworld.Eachlanguageseemstobethemostimportanttothosewhospeakitastheirnativelanguage.Thisisnotstrangeatall,seeingthatitisthelanguagetheylearnedattheirmothers’kneesandmaybetheonlylanguagemanyofthemwilleverknowalltheirlives.

Theimportanceofalanguagecanbejudgedaccordingtoseveralthings.Thefirstisthenumberofnativespeakersthatalanguagehappenstohave.Thesecondishowwidelythenativespeakersaredistributedovertheworld.Nextcomesthecultural,economicandpoliticalinfluenceofthosewhospeakitastheirmothertongue.

TherecanbenodoubtnowthatEnglishisoneoftheworld’smostwidelyusedlanguages.Peopleusealanguageinthreeways:

asanativelanguage,asasecondlanguage,orasaforeignlanguage.Englishisspokenasanativelanguagebynearly300millionpeople:

intheUnitedStates,Britain,Australia,NewZealand,Canada,someCaribbeancountries,andSouthAfrica.Asasecondlanguage,Englishisoftennecessaryforofficialbusiness,education,informationandotheractivitiesinagreatmanycountriessuchasIndia,Pakistan,Nigeria,Singapore,andthePhilippines.Itisoneofthefew“working”languagesoftheUnitedNationsandismorefrequentlyusedthantheothers.

ItissaidthatEnglishhasbecomethelanguageofinternationaltradeandtransport.Mostplanestravelingfromonecountrytoanotheruseittotalkwithairports.Allshipssailingontheoceanscallforhelpbyradioinit.Ithasbeensaidthat60percentoftheworld’sradiobroadcastsand70percentofworld’smailareinEnglish.Atinternationalsportsmeets,atmeetingsofscientistsfromdifferentcountries,andtalkofwritersandartistsfromthecornersoftheearth,Englishisthelanguagemostcommonlyusedandmostwidelyunderstood.

Englishhasinfactbecomethelanguageofinternationalcooperationinscienceandtechnology.Themostadvancedresultsinspace,nuclearandcomputerresearcharepublishedinit.AscientistwhospeaksandwritesEnglishisinclosertouchwiththescientistsinothercountriesthanonewhodoesn’t.

2.HowtoBehaveinanInterview

Inordertomakeagoodimpressionduringajobinterview,youneedtoprepareyourselfforit.Youmustarriveinplentyoftimefortheinterview,sothatyougiveyourselfalittletimetorelaxbeforetheinterviewbegins.

Theimpressionyoumakeasyouwalkintotheroomisveryimportant.Trytofindoutifthecompanyororganizationhasrulesaboutdress.Thentrytodressaccordingtotheirregulations.

Thewaythedifferentkindsofrocklieononeanotherhelpstotellthestoryoflongago.MotherEarthkeptintherocks,yousee,akindofdiaryofallthatwashappeningtoher.Wemightthinkofeachlayerofrockasbeingapageinherdiary.

Someofthepagesintherockdiarytellabouttheseasoflongago.Sometellaboutthelavaflowsofpastages.Sometellthestoryofhowmountainsweremade,andothersthestoryofchangesinclimate.Inthepagesoftherockdiarytherearemany,manyfossils.Thefossilsmaybefootprintsthathavebeenkeptintherockformillionsofyears.Thefossilsmaybepartsofplantsoranimalsthathavebeenremadeinstone.Thereareotherkindsoffossils,too.Theyallhelptotellthestoryoftheplantsandanimalsoflongago.

Theearth’srockdiaryisnoteasytoread.Someofthepagesarefoundinonepartoftheworld,otherpagesinotherpartsoftheworld.Besides,accidentshavehappenedtosomeofthepages.Readingtherecordsoftherockismuchlikereadingabookthathassomepagesbadlytorn,somepagespartlyburned,somepagesalmostspoiledbywater,andsomepagesputinatthewrongplaces.

Ifthelayersofrockintheearth’scrusthadnotbeendisturbedaftertheyweremade,theoldestlayerofrockinanyoneplacewouldbedeepestdownandtheyoungestnearestthetop.Butinmanyplacesthelayersofrockhavebeenfoldedsothatolderlayersareontopofyoungerlayers.

Manyscientistshaveworkedformanyyearstoreadtheearth’sstoryfromitsrocks.Theydonotyetknowitswholestory.Perhapstheyneverwill,buteachyeartheyarereadingmoreandmoreofit.

4.IHaveaDream

IhaveadreamthatonedaythestateofAlabamawhosegovernors’lipsarepresentlydrippingwiththewordsofinterpositionandnullification,willbetransformedintoasituationwherelittleblackboysandblackgirlswillbeabletojoinhandswithlittlewhiteboysandwhitegirlsandwalktogetherassistersandbrothers.

Ihaveadreamtoday!

Ihaveadreamthatonedayeveryvalleyshallbeexalted,everyhillandmountainshallbemadelow,theroughplaceswillbemadeplain,andthecrookedplaceswillbemadestraight,andthegloryoftheLordshallberevealed,andallfleshshallseeittogether.

IamconvincedthattheBeijingGameswillbesuccessfulifChinaisreallywillingtoorganizeverysuccessfulGamesandifitreallyknowsverywellthattheseGamescanbeaturningpointforthecountry.

AswelookforwardtotheGamesofthe29thOlympiadinBeijingin2008,IamcertainthattheChinesepeopleandathleteswilladdtotheexcellence
