Andthosecomparisonsarenowmuchlessrealistic.Andrewhasobservedamongherpatientsthatknowingtheyarelookingataneditedversionofrealityisnodefenseagainsttheemotionalforceofenvy.“WhatInoticeisthatmostofuscanintellectualizewhatweseeonsocialmediaplatforms—weknowthattheseimagesandnarrativesthatarepresentedaren'treal,wecantalkaboutitandrationalizeit—butonanemotionallevel,it'sstillpushingbuttons.Ifthoseimagesornarrativestapintowhatweaspireto,butwhatwedon'thave,thenitbecomesverypowerful.”
