Themoststrikingfindingwasthediscoveryofalargedifferenceinaveragelifespanbetweenthegroupswhowerethemostandtheleastatrisk.Menwhowerenotoverweight，hadneversmoked，anddrankproperlywerefoundtoliveanaverageof11yearslongerthanmenwhowereoverweight，hadsmoked，anddrankexcessively.Forwomen，thegapbetweenthesetwogroupswasfoundtobeevengreater,12years.

“Ourresultsshowhowimportantitistofocusonprevention.Thosewhoavoidriskyhealthbehaviorsareachievingverylongandhealthylives，”saidMyrskyla.It’snotwithoutreasonthatwearetoldrepeatedlytoswitchtoahealthylifestyle，whichcanpreventusfromvariousillnessesaswellaskeepusyoungandactive.“Improvementsinmedicaltechnologyareoftenthoughttobethegatekeepertoahealthierandlongerlife.Butweshowedthatahealthylifestyleisenoughtoenableindividualstoenjoyaverylongandhealthylife，”saidMyrskyla.“Ahealthylifestyleisenoughtogetthebenefits.Avoidingthesebehaviorsisnotanunrealisticgoal.”
