These“collegeswithoutwalls,”astheyaresometimescalled,areattheforefrontoftheefforttobroadenaccesstohighereducation,especiallyforlow-incomestudentswithfull-timejobsandfamilies.Duringmyvisit,Iheardencouragingstoriesofstudentswhoweretakingadvantageoftheseflexiblelearningmodelstopursuedegreesthatcouldputthemonpathstonewcareers.

OneofthosestudentswasShawnLee.Hehadacompellingstory:

Afterdroppingoutofcollegedecadesago,hefoundhimselfinaseriesoflow-paying,oftenback-breakingjobs.Herecentlydecidedtogethisdegreewhenhehadhisfirstchildandwantedtostartbuildingabetterlife.

TuckedawayinanindustrialparkinTempe,RioSaladodidn’tlookmuchlikeatraditionalinstituteofhighereducation.Therewerenostudentsrunningtoclass.Justacoupleofglass-facedofficebuildings.Thecollegehadjust22full-timefacultyserving60,000students,withmorethanhalfofthemattendingclassesonline.

Indoorandoutdoorsportsactivitiesbothmaketheeyesfocusonmoredistantobjects,whichpreventstheeyesfromchangingshape.Butoutdooractivitiesmaybetterhelpavoidmyopiathanindoorsportsactivities.

JaneGwiazda,apsychologistfromNewEnglandCollegeofOptometryinBoston,US,whodoesresearchinsightproblems,says:

“Naturallightisgoodforeyegrowth.AndextravitaminDfromthesunmightcontributetoeyegrowth.”

Manydoctorssuggestthateverychildgetitsfirsteyetestdonewhenhe/sheisabouttwoandhalfyearsold,andevenifhis/hersightseemsperfect.
