WASHINGTON—PatientswithHIV,thevirusthatcausesAIDS,oftendevelopvitamindeficiencies(缺乏).Anewstudyhasfoundthatgivingthesepatientsamultivitaminwithamineralsupplement(补充)helpstofightthediseaseandslowsthedisease’sprogression.
Sub-SaharanAfricahasalwaysbeenthecenteroftheAIDS.InBotswana,despiteaggressivepreventioncampaigns,oneoutofeveryfouradultsisinfectedwithHIV.ProfessorMariannaBaumbasedherlatestresearchthere.
Baumrecruitedalmost900newlyinfectedadultswhohadnotyetreceivedtheanti-AIDSdrugsthattargetthevirus.
TheseadultswerethendividedintogroupsthatrandomlyreceiveddifferentcombinationsofvitaminsB,CandE,themineralselenium(硒)oraplacebo(安慰剂).
MostpatientswithHIVbecomedeficientinthesevitamins,whichhelpimproveimmunity(免疫).Baumsaidsheinitiallythoughtthemultivitaminsaloneorseleniumalonewouldbeeffectiveinstrengtheningtheimmunesystem,butfoundthatincorrect.
“Weweresurprisedtofindthatonlythecombinationwaseffective,”saidBaum.
ResearchshowsthatwhenpeoplewithHIVreceiveanti-retroviraldrugs(抗逆转录病毒)shortlyafterinfection,theycanremainhealthyandarelesslikelytopassthevirustoothers.Formanycountries,however,thecostoftheseanti-AIDSdrugsisstillprohibitive.
