I'vebeentoseeTouchingtheVoid,whichisthestoryofapairofmountainclimbersinthePeruvianAndes.

Matt:

Isitatruestory?

Jack:

Yes,itis.In1985,JoeSimpsonandSimonYatessetouttoclimbthe7,000-metreSiulaGrandemountaininthePeruvianAndes.SimpsonandYateswereyoung,fitandconfidenttheywouldsucceed.

Matt:

Sowhathappens?

Jack:

SimpsonandYates'styleofclimbinginvolvedmovingquicklyupamountainwithveryfewsuppliesandnobasecamps,whichisrisky.Youcan'tmakeanymistakes.

Matt:

IthinkIcanguesswhathappensnext.

Well,forawhile,thingsgowell.ButsuddenlySimpson,attheendoftherope,failstorespondtoYates'signal.YatesisunabletomoveanyfurtherandhasnoideawhySimpsonisnotresponding.SoYatesholdsonwithallofhisstrength,alltooawarethateventuallyhisstrengthwouldgiveoutandbothwouldfall.ButwhatYatesdoesn'tknowisthathehasloweredSimpsonovertheedgeofacrevasse.Simpsonishanginginmid-airfromtheverticalfaceofthemountain.He'sunabletoclimbbackuptheropeandhe'sgotfrostbittenfingersandcan'tcommunicatewithYatesabovehim.

Matt:

Sowhathappens?

Jack:

Well,Idon'twanttospoiltheendingforanyonewhohasn'tseenityet.

Matt:

Jack:

ButYateshangsontotheropeforanhour,gettingweaker.Foranyclimber,cuttingtheropethatbindshimtohispartnerisunthinkable.
