Duringthenineteenthcenturytherewerefivewidespreadoutbreaksofinfluenza.Thelastofthefivehappenedin1889andmarkedthebeginningofthestoryofinfluenzainourtime.Likethepresentoutbreak,itstartedinAsia.

Thefirstbigadvancewasmadein1933,whenateamofBritishdoctorsfoundthetypeAinfluenzavirus.In1940adoctoroftheUnitedStatesfoundtypeB.LatertypeCwasfound,alongwithmanysub-groupsoftypesAandB.VaccineswerepreparedandusedwidelybythearmiesduringtheSecondWorldWartopreventoutbreaks.
