WebegintodayinPoland,wherePresidentLechKaczynskiandhiswifehavebeenlaidtorest.TheywerekilledinaplanecrashlastweekinRussia.Morethan90otherpassengersontheflight,includingmanyPolishofficials,diedaswell.Yesterday,Kaczynski'stwinbrotherledmournersatthefuneral.TensofthousandsofpeoplegatheredonthestreetsinPolandasthepresidentandfirstlady'scoffinswerebroughttotheservice.ManystayedoutsidethecathedralinalargesquarewheretheceremonywasshownongiantTVs.Yesterday'sserviceconcludedanationalweekofmourninginPoland.SomeofficialsestimatedthatmorethanamillionpeopletookpartineventsthatpaidtributetoPresidentKaczynski.Russia'spresident,DmitryMedvedev,attendedyesterday'sfuneral.Otherworldleaders,includingPresidentObamahadplannedtobethere,buttheyweren'tabletomakeit.

ThatwasbecauseofhugecloudsofashcomingoutofavolcanoinIceland.Youseesomeoftheimagesovermyshoulderhere.Thevolcanostartederuptinglastmonth;itgotworselastweek.Thatiswhenofficialsstartedgettingconcernedabouttheash,especiallyabouttheeffectthatitcouldhaveonplanes.Oneexpertexplainsthereasonfortheirconcern.

Whenitgetsintothejetenginesandthejetengineinlets,literally,itremeltsthismaterial,thisashmaterial,anditformsaglass-likesubstanceonthejetenginevanes,andthepartsanditcanclogthemanditwillstopthem.

Havinganenginestopinmidflight,notsomethingyouwant.Thatiswhysomanyflightshavebeencanceledandwhysomanyworldleadersweren'tabletoattendthefuneralinPoland.Theimpactofthisontheaviationindustryhasbeenmassive;biggerthanyoumightthink.Someofficialsaresayingit'sactuallyworsethanthetimerightafterthe9/11terroristattacksin2001.Andthere'saneconomicimpacthere,too.Accordingtoexperts,airlineshavebeenlosingatleast$200millionaday.Thatmeansasofyesterday,they'dwrackedupaboutabilliondollarsinlosses.Thereissomepossiblegoodnews,though,especiallyforallofthetravelerswho'vebeenstranded.OfficialsranafewdozentestflightsyesterdayandsaidtheskiesoveralotofEuropemightbesafeforairtravel,althoughtheycouldn'tmakeanyguarantees.Meantime,GaryTuchmanhassomeincrediblepicturestoshowyou.Hetookahelicoptertothevolcanowhereallthisashiscomingfrom.Checkoutwhathefound.

ThiswasthefirstdayvisibilitywasgoodenoughtoseeupclosetheIcelandvolcanoerupting.So,weflewaboardahelicoptertogetascloseasthepilotdared.Hedaredtogetalotcloserthanweimagined,onlyseveralhundredfeetawayfromadisplaythatlookedlikeitwasfromanotherworld.Bouldersshootingoutofthecrater,lightningboltsinthesmokethattoweredhundredsoffeethigh.

Lookingatthisvolcanoeruptingthiscloseupisbothawe-inspiringandfrightening.It'sbeenquietsincethe1820s.Thisvolcanostoppederuptingin1823;ithadbeendoingsoforabouttwoyears.It'shardtoimaginetheeconomiccatastropheifitlastedthatlongnow.

Thispartofthemountainrangeiswheretheeruptionbeganlastmonth.Now,it'smostlyquietwithjustpocketsofsmoke.Buthere,theeruptionsarehuge,dramatic,andshownosignsofweakening.ThereisanothernearbyvolcanocalledKatlawhichhasn'teruptedinalmost90years,andhistoricallyeruptsaroundevery50years.It'sfeareditcouldbefarmoredevastatingthanthisone.

OneofthosehistoricmomentsyoujustsawisbringingpeopletodowntownOklahomaCitytoday.It'sthe15thanniversaryofatragicbombingthattookplacethere.TheAlfredP.Murrahbuildingwaseventuallytorndown,andthismemorialwasbuiltonthesite,alongwithamuseumthat'sdedicatedbothtoteachingpeopleaboutthetragedyandeducatingvisitorsabouttheimpactofviolenceingeneral.Beyondthenearly170peoplekilledintheOklahomaCityattack,morethan500otherswereinjured.Today'sceremonies,whichincludememorialservicesandadayofcommunityservice,paytributetoallofthosevictims.

ItisNationalParkWeek.Andinhonorofthat,theNationalParkServiceiswaivingentrancefeestoall392parks.They'retotallyfree.Whatwe'regoingtodoisspotlightjustafewofthoseparksstartingwiththeveryfirstone:

Yellowstone.Itwasfoundedasanationalparkin1872,morethan40yearsbeforetheNationalParkServicewasevencreated.Yellowstone,ifyou'veeverbeenthere,youknowitismassive.Itcoversnearly3,500squaremilesandtakesuppartsofWyoming,MontanaandIdaho.Hometoallsortsofwildlife.Itmightbemostfamousforitsgeysers,includingOldFaithful,whicheruptsprettyregularly,every30to120minutes.

Well,it'snotasoldasYellowstone,butthisKentuckyfireworksshowknowshowtobringthethunder.It'stheThunderOverLouisville,thecountry'slargestannualfireworksshow,andit'sablast.TheThunderispartoftheopeningceremoniesfortheKentuckyDerbyFestival.Thehorseraceisn'tforanothercoupleweeksyet,buttherearealotofeventsleadinguptoit,includingthisilluminatingdisplay.Officialsestimatethat700,000peoplecameoutforthe21stannualThunder.Theshowwasdelayedbyabout15minutesbecauseofacomputerglitch,butafteraquickreboot,thingswentoffwithoutahitch.
