Foreword—ThisReaffirmedDocumenthasbeenchangedonlytoreflectthenewSAETechnicalStandardsBoard

Format.

1.Scope—ThisSAEStandardcoverscompletegeneralanddimensionalspecificationsfortheflangedheadsandsplitflangeclamphalvesapplicabletofour-boltsplitflangetypetube,pipe,andhoseconnectionswithappropriatereferencestotheO-ringsealsandattachingcomponentsusedintheirassembly.（SeeFigures1and2.）Alsoincludedarerecommendedportdimensionsandportdesignconsiderations.

Theflangedheadsspecifiedareincorporatedintofittingshavingsuitablemeansforattachmentoftubes,pipes,orhosestoprovideconnectionends.Theseconnectionsareintendedforapplicationinhydraulicsystems,onindustrialandcommercialproducts,whereitisdesiredtoavoidtheuseofthreadedconnections.

THERATEDWORKINGPRESSUREOFAHOSEASSEMBLYCOMPRISINGSAEJ518HOSECONNECTIONSANDSAEJ517HOSESHALLNOTEXCEEDTHELOWEROFTHETWOWORKINGPRESSURERATEDVALUES.

FlangedheadsshallbeasspecifiedinFigure3andTable1.SplitflangeclamphalvesshallbeasspecifiedinFigure4andTable1.PortdimensionsandspacingshallbeasspecifiedinFigure5andTable2.

O-ringseals,havingnominaldimensionsasindicatedinTable1,areusedinconjunctionwiththeseconnections.TheyshallconformtothesealsspecifiedinSAEJ120,TableonDimensionsandTolerances.

BoltsforusewiththeseconnectionsshallbeofthesizesandlengthsindicatedinTable1.TheyshallbeofSAEGrade5materialorbetterasspecifiedinSAEJ429.SocketheadcapscrewsofSAEGrade5materialorbetterareacceptable.

Lockwashers,ifused,shallbeinaccordancewiththelightspringlockwashersspecifiedinSAEJ489,DimensionsofLight,Medium,Heavy,ExtraHeavy,andHiCollarSpringLockWashers,andofsizesapplicabletothecorrespondingbolts.

ThefollowinggeneralspecificationssupplementthedimensionaldatacontainedinTable1withrespecttoallunspecifieddetail.

SAETechnicalStandardsBoardRulesprovidethat:

“ThisreportispublishedbySAEtoadvancethestateoftechnicalandengineeringsciences.Theuseofthisreportisentirelyvoluntary,anditsapplicabilityandsuitabilityforanyparticularuse,includinganypatentinfringementarisingtherefrom,isthesoleresponsibilityoftheuser.”

3.SizeDesignation—Four-boltsplitflangeconnectionsizesaredesignatedbythenominalflangesizewhich

correspondstothemaximuminsidediameteroftheholethroughtheflangedhead.

4.DimensionsandTolerances—Tabulateddimensionsandtolerancesshallapplytothefinishedparts,platedorotherwiseprocessed,asspecifiedbythepurchaser.Tolerancesonalldimensionsforflangedheads,splitflangeclamphalves,andportsnototherwiselimitedshallbe±0.4mm（0.016in）.

5.Material—Flangedheadsshallbemadeofsteel.Splitflangeclamphalvesshallbemadefromamaterialwith

thepropertiesinTable3.

6.Finish—Theexternalsurfacesandthreadsofallcarbonsteelpartsshallbeplatedorcoatedwithasuitablematerialthatpassesa72hsaltspraytestinaccordancewithASTMB117.Anyappearanceofredrustduringthe72hsaltspraytestshallbeconsideredfailure,exceptforthefollowing:

a.Allinternalfluidpassages.

b.Edgessuchashexpoints,serrations,andcrestsofthreadswheretheremaybemechanicaldeformationoftheplatingorcoatingtypicalofmass-producedpartsorshippingeffects.c.Areaswherethereismechanicaldeformationoftheplatingorcoatingcausedbycrimping,flaring,bending,andotherpost-platemetalformingoperations.

d.Areaswherethepartsaresuspendedoraffixedinthetestchamberwherecondensatecanaccumulate.

NOTE—Cadmiumplatingisnotpreferredduetoenvironmentalreasons.PartsmanufacturedtothisStandardafterJanuary1,1997,shallnotbecadmiumplated.Internalfluidpassagesshallbeprotectedfromcorrosionduringstorage.Changesinplatingmayaffectassemblytorquesandrequirerequalification,whenapplicable.

Boltsshallbefinishedwithasuitablecoatingthatmeetthepreviousrequirementsaftera16hsaltspraytestinaccordancewithASTMB117.Lockwashersmayhaveaplain（natural）finishorasuitablecoating.

7.Workmanship—Workmanshipshallconformtothebestcommercialpracticetoproducehigh-qualityconnectioncomponents.Connectioncomponentsshallbefreefromallhangingburrs,loosescale,andsliverswhichmightbecomedislodgedinusageandallotherdefectswhichmightaffecttheirserviceability.Allsealingsurfacesmustbesmoothexceptthatannulartoolmarksupto3mm（100min）max,unlessspecifiedotherwise,shallbepermissible.
