RepublicanswhotriedtostripBillClintonofhispresidencyhaveeagerlyembracedtheDemocrat,takinghiswordsontaxesanddecisionsonBosniaandusingthemtopoundanotherDemocraticpresident,BarackObama.

InconflictwiththeObamaWhiteHouse,ClintonsaidthisweekthatbroadtaxcutsthatexpiredinJanuaryshouldbetemporarilyrenewed,includingforthewealthiestAmericans,togivelawmakerstimetoreachadealonalonger-termextensionthatshouldexcludetherich.Republicanspouncedontheelection-yeargiftonWednesday,highlightingtheformerpresident'scommentsandurgingObamatofollowhisadvice.

Thenextday,inaSenatespeechcriticizingtheObamaadministration'sresponsetotheviolenceinSyria,RepublicanSenatorJohnMcCainrecalledClinton'smovestoendthecivilstrifeintheBalkansinthe1990s.

"IpraythatPresidentObamawillfinallyrealizewhatPresidentClintoncametounderstandduringtheBalkanswars,"saidMcCain."PresidentClinton-whotookmilitaryactiontostopethniccleansinginBosnia,andwhodidsoinKosovowithoutaUNSecurityCouncilmandate-ultimatelyunderstoodthat,whenregimesarewillingtocommitanyatrocitytostayinpower,diplomacycannotsucceeduntilthemilitarybalanceofpowerchangesontheground."

McCainadded:

"HowmanymorepeoplehavetodieinSyriabeforetheUnitedStateswillassumeitsresponsibilityofleadership?

"

Pursuinganypoliticaladvantage,RepublicansgleefullyaretossingClinton'srecordandrhetoricatObama,highlightingwhattheyseeasasplitbetweenthetwoDemocratsandusingittoadvancetheirarguments.

ThatwascertainlythecasethisweekonwhethertoextendthereductionsinincometaxratesandotherleviesfirstenactedunderformerpresidentGeorgeW.Bush.ClintonwasatoddswithObama,thecandidatehebacksforre-electionandthemanheraisedmillionsforatNewYorkeventsearlierintheweek.Republicansreveledinthedivide.

"RepublicanshavealwayslikedDemocratswhoarenolongereligibleforelection,"saidDemocraticRepresentativeBarneyFrank.

Democratsdoit,too,mostrecentlyquotingRepublicanPresidentRonaldReaganonraisingthenation'sborrowinglimit.ThedifferenceisthattheseareRepublicans,whotriedtorunClintonoutofWashingtonin1998,votingforhisimpeachmentandconvictionoverwhetherhecommittedperjuryandobstructedjusticeintryingtohidehissexualrelationshipwithaWhiteHouseintern.NowhiswordsresonateontaxesandevenRepublicanpresidentialcandidateMittRomney'sbusinesscareer.

Ontaxes,Obamaopposesrenewingthereductionsforpeopleearningmorethan$250,000ayear,arguingthattheyshoulddotheirparttoreininthedeficit.

Clinton,inaninterviewthisweekonCNBC'sClosingBell,said"WhatIthinkweneedtodoistofindsomewaytoavoidthefiscalcliff,toavoiddoinganythingthatwouldcontracttheeconomynow,andthendealwithwhat'snecessaryinthelong-termdebtreductionplanassoonastheycan,whichpresumablywillbeaftertheelection."

Askedwhetherthatmeantextendingthetaxcuts,Clintonsaid:

"Theywillprobablyhavetoputeverythingoffuntilearlynextyear.That'sprobablythebestthingtodorightnow."

WASHINGTON-USPresidentBarackObamastressedonFridaytheUSeconomywas"notdoingfine,"seekingtoclarifyhisearliercommentsaboutthehealthoftheprivatesectorthatRepublicanspouncedontotrytopainthimasoutoftouch.

SpeakingtoreportersintheOvalOffice,Obamasaidthatwhilecorporateprofitswerestrongandcompanieshadbeenaddingjobs,smallbusinesseswerehavingatoughtimegettingfinancingandotherpocketsoftheeconomyneededmoreattention.

Earlierintheday,Obamahadtoldanewsconferencethattheprivatesectorwas"doingfine,"butthatbudget-pinchedstatesneededhelp.

RepublicansseizedonObama'scommentsonthestateoftheprivatesector,withHouseofRepresentativesSpeakerJohnBoehnersaying,"Mr.President,takeitfromme,theprivatesectorisnotdoingwell."

PresumptiveRepublicanpresidentialnomineeMittRomney,whoisseekingtounseatObamaintheNovember6election,calledhisstatement"anextraordinarymiscalculation."

Inhislatercomments,Obamarepeatedhisviewthatstateandlocalgovernmentsneededhelptoavoidteacherandpolicelayoffs,andthatCongressshouldhelpbuoystrugglinghomeownersandconstructionworkerswhoremainoutofworkseveralyearsafterthefinancialcrisis.

"Itisabsolutelyclearthattheeconomyisnotdoingfine,that'sthereasonIhadapressconference,"theDemocraticpresidentsaid,seatednexttoPhilippinesPresidentBenignoAquino.

AskedaboutRomney'sresponsetohisearliercomments,ObamaaccusedRepublicansoflackingideasabouthowtohelptheUSeconomyfullyrecover.

"Whatstepsaretheywillingtotakerightnowthataregoingtomakeanactualdifference?

Sofar,allwehaveheardareadditionaltaxcutsforthefolkswhoaredoingwell,"hesaid.
