Flyingbatswerelongthoughttobesilentcreatures,butthisisnowknownnottobethecase.Whileinflight,batsarecontinuouslyemittingaseriesofultrasonicorientationpulsesthatareinaudibletothehumanear.Thefrequencyofthecriesofbats,at50,000vibrationspersecond,isestimatedtobetwoandhalftimeshigherthanthehumanearcanhear.

Thisuniqueoperation,ahighlyrefinedtypeofsonarsystem,allowsthebattodetectreboundingpulsesfromobstaclesnearandfarinitsenvironment.Theysystemisunique,additionally,inthatthebatiscapableofsortingthroughnumerousreboundingpulsessoastoavoidobjectsinitsimmediatepath.Rescarchersareattemptingtounderstandthissysteminhopesthatitmayrevealhowthehumanbrainprocessessensoryinformation.
