ThevariouskindsofcohesionhadbeenoutlinedbyMAKHallidayinhiswritingsonstylisticsandtheconceptwasdevelopedbyRuqayiaHasaninherUniversityofEdinburghdoctoralthesis.
Cohesiverelationsarerelationsbetweentwoormoreelementsinatextthatareindependentofthestructure:
forexamplebetweenapersonalpronounandanantecedentpropername,suchasJohn•….he.Asemanticrelationofthiskindmaybesetupeitherwithinasentencewiththeconsequeneethatwhenitcrossesasentenceboundaryithastheeffectofmakingthetwosentencescoherewithoneanother.
Themajorfunctionofcohesionistextformation.Asdefined:
textisaunifiedwholeoflinguisticitems,thisunityoftextasasemanticwholeissourcefortheconceptofcohesion.

Textinlinguisticsreferstoanypassagespokenwrittenofwhateverlengththatformsaunifiedwhole.Areadercaneasilyidentifywhetherthepassageheisreadingisatextorotherwiseacollectionofunrelatedsentences.Atextmaybe:
spoken,written,prose,verse,dialogue,monologue,singleproverb,asinglecryforhelporalldaydiscussiononacommittee.AtextisaunitofIanguageinuse.Agrammaticalunitthatislargerthanasentence.Atextisnotsomethingthatislikeasentenceonlybiggerorlarger.Itismisleading.Rathertextcanbebestdefinedasasemanticunit;aunitnotofformbutofmeaning.Ifitissemanticunit,wewillnotexpecttofinditinstructureofasentenceasagrammaticalunitasphrase,clauseetc.
