OrdinarypeopleinBritainhavemorewashingmachines,televisionsandcarsthanin1946.Theyalsohavemorefearofunemployment.Whereasoncethenation'sheroesusedtobesoldiersorpoliticians,todaytheyaremorelikelytobefamousfacesontelevisionorinfilms,suchasSylvesterStallone.

ThesearejustsomeofthechangesdiscoveredinaseriesofsurveysbytheMarketResearchSociety.Morethan3,000peoplewerequestionedandtheresultswerecomparedwithasimilarsurveydonein1946.Inmanycases,thenewsurveytellsuswhatwealreadyknew,suchasthefactthatmanypeoplearebetteroffinamaterialsenseandthatwomenspendmuchlesstimeatthekitchensinkorinthehomelookingaftertheirfamilies.Butwealsolearnanumberofotherthings.Tastesinclothingandentertainmenthavechangedconsiderably.Peopledressfarmorecasuallythantheyusedto.Andwhereas"aneveningout"formostpeopleusedtomeanavisittothecinema,todayitisfarmorelikelytoinvolvegoingtoarestaurantortoadisco.Somethingshavenotchanged.PeoplestilladorethefilmsofHumphreyBogartandIngridBergmaneventhoughtheyaremorelikelytowatchthemontelevisionorvideo.Anddespitethevarietyofforeignfoodnowavailable,morethanaquarterofthepeopleinthesurveysaidtheypreferredamealofsteakandchips.Theonlychangeisthatalargenumberwouldalsolikewinewithitinsteadofbeer.In1946onlyasmallproportion—lessthan10percent—everdrankwinewiththeirmeals.

Oneofthemostsurprisingthingstocomeoutofthenewresearchisthelackofambitionamongthemiddle-aged.Manyexecutivesfeelthatbythetimetheyareintheirmid-forties,theyhaveachievedalltheirmostimportantgoalsinlife.Mostofthemsaidtheywouldprefertoretireintheirfiftiesratherthangoonworkingforapromotion.

NicolePernotisthemanageressofaForumhypermarket,situated20kilometersfromArras,atowninthenorth-eastofFrance.Forumhas600storesinfivedifferentcountriesandplanstoexpandintoEasternEurope.Thehugehypermarketemploysover300people,andhasparkingspacesforover3.000cars.“Peoplenowadayshavebusylives”,saysNikole,“sowetrytoattractfamiliesbyofferingthemacompleteshoppingexperience,includingafullrestaurantserviceandfreeentertainmentforthechildren.Wetrytomakeitpossibleforshopperstodoalltheirweeklyshoppinginoneplace.Peoplecomeherenotonlyforfoodandhouseholdgoods,butalsoclothes,electricalgoods,books,CDs…..Infact,weselleverythingfrompeanutstopersonalcomputers!

Fiveyearsago,DaveStirlinghadtheideaofsellingCDsovertheInternet.ThebusinesshestartedfromhishomeinOhio,USA,nowsells500,000CDsyearandhismadehimintoamillionaireattheageoftwenty-four.“Icouldseerightawaythatthiswasthefutureofshopping”,saysStirling.“Whyshouldyoupay$15foraCD–andspendthetimeandmoneygettingtothestoreandparkingyourcar,when,byclickingonyourcomputer,youcanhavethesameCDbroughttoyourdoorforhalfthecost?
