ThesearejustsomeofthechangesdiscoveredinaseriesofsurveysbytheMarketResearchSociety.Morethan3,000peoplewerequestionedandtheresultswerecomparedwithasimilarsurveydonein1946.Inmanycases,thenewsurveytellsuswhatwealreadyknew,suchasthefactthatmanypeoplearebetteroffinamaterialsenseandthatwomenspendmuchlesstimeatthekitchensinkorinthehomelookingaftertheirfamilies.Butwealsolearnanumberofotherthings.Tastesinclothingandentertainmenthavechangedconsiderably.Peopledressfarmorecasuallythantheyusedto.Andwhereas"aneveningout"formostpeopleusedtomeanavisittothecinema,todayitisfarmorelikelytoinvolvegoingtoarestaurantortoadisco.Somethingshavenotchanged.PeoplestilladorethefilmsofHumphreyBogartandIngridBergmaneventhoughtheyaremorelikelytowatchthemontelevisionorvideo.Anddespitethevarietyofforeignfoodnowavailable,morethanaquarterofthepeopleinthesurveysaidtheypreferredamealofsteakandchips.Theonlychangeisthatalargenumberwouldalsolikewinewithitinsteadofbeer.In1946onlyasmallproportion—lessthan10percent—everdrankwinewiththeirmeals.
