DifferencesofBusinessEtiquettebetweenChineseandAustralian

I.Introduction

Etiquetteisthewayapersonpresentshimselftoothers,beingcomfortableandmakingotherpeoplearoundcomfortable.

Etiquetteisacodeofconventionalrulesofpersonalbehaviorinpolitesociety.Inmyopinion,etiquettesarerulesandregulationsthatneedtobefollowedinthatparticularenvironment.Etiquetteisasetofpracticesandformswhicharefollowedinawidevarietyofsituations;manypeopleconsiderittobeabranchofdecorum,orgeneralsocialbehavior.Eachsocietyhasitsowndistinctetiquette,andvariouscultureswithinasocietyalsohavetheirownrulesandsocialnorms.Learningetiquettecanbeverychallengingforpeople,whoarenewtoaparticularculture.Insummary,etiquetteisgoodmanners.

Etiquetteistheprocessandmeanstoshowrespecttoeachotherininterpersonalrelationshipbycertain,commonprocedures.TheEtiquettecanbesaidtobeaperson’sexternalappearanceofinwardcultivationandquality.Firstly,itcanhelppeopleraisetheirself-cultivation.Secondly,itwillpromotesocialinteractionandimprovepeople’sinterpersonalrelationship.Italsocanhelptobuildbusinessrelationships.Sincedifferentcountrieshavedifferenthistoricalandculturalbackgrounds.

1.Thedefinitionofbusinessetiquette

Businessetiquetteisbasicallythesocialguidelinesandmannerstobefollowedinbusinesssituationswhendealingwithothers.

Businessetiquetteisthewayyouhandleyourselfinabusinessandsocialenvironment.Itcanrangefrommeetingswiththebosstomeetingswithclientsandcustomers-andknowingtherightthingstodoandsay.

Thebasicsofbusinessetiquettewillincludeknowingthepropermannersformeetingandgreetingothers,howclosetostandandwhy,customsofclientsofemployeesandemployers,basicofficeequipmentetiquette,theprofessionalpresenceforeveryone(whattowearandnottowear),thebasicsofhowtoactinbothbusinessandsocialsituations,howtomanagediningsituationsineveryculture(whichfork,glassandplate,etc).

Businessetiquetteisessentiallyaboutbuildingrelationshipswithcolleagues,clientsorcustomers.Inthebusinessworld,itisthesepeoplethatcaninfluenceyoursuccessorfailure.Etiquette,andinparticularbusinessetiquette,issimplyameansofmaximizingyourbusinesspotentialbypresentingyourselffavorably.ThepaperistryingtoanalyzethebusinessetiquettecodebetweenChineseandAustraliantoguidepeopleintherightway.

2.Theimportanceofgoodbusinessetiquette

Itisveryimportanttopracticegoodmannersandetiquettesinordertosucceedinyourbusiness,belikedbypeopleandmaintaingoodrelationshipswithclients,customersandemployees.

Whenyoudonotpracticegoodetiquetteintentionallyorunintentionally,youareboundtofacelotofobstaclesonthepathtosuccess.Butifapersonisgenerallyconsiderateandattentivetotheneedsofthosewhoworkforhim/herbyfollowingthebasicrulesofetiquette,he/shewilldefinitelybesuccessfulinanyventure.

Abusinessmanwasrecentlyinvolvedinabusinessmeetingthatwentsourandthreatenedtoscuttleagooddeal.WhathappenedwasthattheChinesepartyreceivingtheAmericanpurchaserwaslateinreachinghishotel.TheAmericanwasfuriousashehadatightscheduleandthattheywerelateandthreatenedtoquitehispurchase.

TheChinesepartywaslatebecausetheyweregivenavagueaddressofalake-sidehotel.PeoplecanjudgethatwhathappenedwasthattheAmericangavehishotelasLakesidehotel.Unfortunately,therewerenumeroushotelsalongthelakebuttheChineseweretooshytoenquirewhichlakesidehotelearlierbecausetheywereafraidtheAmericanwould'loseface'forhavinggivenavagueaddress.Instead,theyspentthemorninghoppingfromonelakesidehoteltoanotherlookingforthisAmericangentleman."

Inmanybusinessoccasion,Chinesepeoplearetooshinetooask.ThereasonswhichaccountforthisisthatChinesepeoplepaymoreattentiontofacevalue.Theyareafraidofaskingpeoplemeanstheyarelackofability.TheAustralianwayofcommunicatingisquiteforthcominganddirect,andperhapsevenalittlebrusqueincontrasttotheirSouthAsianneighbors.Don’tevermistakethissortofapproachforrudeness,asAustraliansarerenownedstraighttalkers,yetrelaxedandinformalwithit.Theydon’tgenerallypartakeinidlechitchat,especiallyinbusinessdealings,andusuallythereisnodoubleorhiddenmeaninginwhattheysay,astrustisconsideredavirtue.
