OnceIsetoffonmytripinDecember2008,Ifoundthattravellingwithoutusingplaneswasnoteasy.IttooksevendaysandnightsontrainstogetfromMoscowtoBeijing.Sometimes,Iwouldn’tseeavillageorahumanbeingfor10hours.Ihadawholecabintomyselffromtheseconddayofthatjourney.

ItturnedoutthattravellingwithnoreservationswasfarlessdifficultthanIhadimagined.Pullingintoacityonabuswithabag,lookinginaguidebookforafewsuggestionsofaccommodations(住宿),andthenfindinganemptyroomwasneveraproblem.

Formostanimals,thecolouroftheirfurorotherbodycoveringhasgenerallydevelopedascamouflage.Thatallowsanimalstomixintothebackgroundandavoidbeingeaten,orforpredators(捕食者)toremainhiddenduringhunting.Oneexampleisthesandy-colouredcoatofthedesertfennecfox,whichusescamouflageforbothhuntingandhiding.
