Airforceinparticular,hasdesignedandcarriedoutmanyanimalexperiments.
Thepurposedexperimentswereengineeredsothatmanyanimalswouldsufferand
diewithoutanycertaintythatthissufferinganddeathwouldsaveasingle
life,orbenefithumansinanywayatall;butthesamecanbesaidfortensof
thousandsofotherexperimentsperformedintheUSeachyear.Limitingitto
justexperimentsdoneonbeagles,thefollowingmightsockmostpeople:

eventuallydied.Oneofthedeathsoccurredduringanepilepticseizure;another

thedogsdiedwithinthefirsttwoweeks.Theexperimentersdeterminedthedose
atwhichfiftypercentoftheanimalswilldiewithninety-fivepercent
confidence.Theirritateddogsvomited,haddiarrhea,andlosttheirappetites.
Later,theyhemorrhagedfromthemouth,nose,andeyes.Intheirreport,the
experimenterscomparedtheirexperimenttoothersofthesamenaturethateach
usedaroundsevenhundreddogs.Theexperimenterssaidthattheinjurienvolutions.
Dogsinconvultionsbreathedasrapidlyastwohundredtimesaminutebefore
theypassedoutfromlackofoxygen.Uponrecoveryfromanepisodeof
convulsionsandcollapse,thedogswereuncoordinated,apparentlyblind,andany
stimulussuchasdroppingafeedingpan,squirtingwater,ortouchingthe
animalsinitiatedanotherconvulsion.Afterfurtherexperimentationonan
additionaltwentybeagles,theexperimentersconcludedthatmassivedailydoses
ofMethoxychlorproducedifferenteffectsindogsfromthoseproducedinpigs.
ThesethreeexamplesshouldbeenoughtoshowthattheAirforcebeagle
experimentswereinnowayexceptional.Notethatalloftheseexetheanimals
extremelysick.Also,theseexperimentsarepartsofseriesofsimilar
experiments,repeatedwithonlyminorvariations,thatarebeingcarriedoutall
overthecountry.TheseexperimentsDoNotsavehumanlivesorimprovethemin
anyway.ItwasalreadyknownthatStrontium90isunhealthybeforethebeagles
died;andtheexperimenterswhopoisoneddogsandpigswithMethoxychlorknew
beforehandthatthelargeamountstheywerefeedingtheanimals(amountsno
humancouldeverconsume)wouldcausedamage.Inanycase,asthediffering
resultstheyobtainedonpigsanddogsmakeitclear,itisnotpossibleto
reachanyfirmconclusionabouttheeffectsofasubstanceonhumansfromtests
onotherspecies.Thepracticeofexperimentingonnon-humananimalsasit
existstodaythroughouttheworldrevealsthebrutalconsequencesofspeciesism
(Singer29).Inthiscountryeveryoneissupposedtobeequal,butapparently
somepeoplejustdonhavetoobeythelaw.Thatis,inNewYorkandsomeother
states,licensedlaboratoriesareimmunefromordinaryanticrueltylaws,and
theseplacesareoftenownedbystatesorhouseholdproductsbetestedonanimals.
Nevertheless,bysixclockthisevening,hundredsofanimalswillhavetheir
