    Thegreatmajorityofallearthquakesoccurintwospecificgeographicareas.OnesuchareaencompassesthePacificOceanandits contiguous landmasses.TheotherextendsfromtheEastIndiestotheAtlasMountains,includingtheHimalayas,Iran,Turkey,andtheAlpineregions.Itisinthesetwogreatbeltsorzonesthatninetypercentofallearthquakestakeplace;theymay,however,happenanywhereatanytime.

     Thiselementoftheunknown hasforcenturiesaddedgreatlytothedreadandhorrorsurroundingearthquakes,butinrecenttimestherehavebeenindicationsthatearthquakepredicationmaybepossible.Byanalyzingchangesinanimalbehavior,patternsofmovementsintheearth′scrust,variationsintheforceofgravityandtheearth′smagneticfield,andthefrequencywithwhichminorearthtremors(震动)areobserved,scientistshaveshownincreasingsuccessinanticipatingwhenandwhereearthquakeswillstrike.Asaresult,aworldwideearthquakewarningnetworkisalreadyinoperationandhashelpedtopreparefor(andthuslessen)thevastdestructionthatmightotherwisehavebeentotallyunexpected.
