TheBritishnovelistandessayistWilliamGolding(bornin1911)isbestknownastheauthoroftheinternationalbestsellerLordoftheFlies(1945).In“ThinkingasaHobby”,hedefinesthreegradesofthinkinganddescribeshisintellectualandnotsointellectualchildhood,adolescence,andmaturity.
Venusstatue
TheancientVenusstatueisalsoknownastheAphroditegoddess.TheoriginalgoddessVenusstatuecanbefoundinPairsattheLouverMuseum.VenusDeMiloAphroditewascarvedbythesculptorofAntiochontheMaeanderRiveratabout150BCanditwasonlylaterrediscovered.InthegoddessAphrodite’ssonwasnamedErosinGreekMythologyfortheGreeksandCupid,thegodofloveandsexualdesireandthemessengeroflove,inRomanMythology.TothisdaytheVenusstatueremainsasculpturalmasterpiecewithfewequals.
Leopardstatue
ThelonelyleopardstatueisnearHoutBay,whichislocatedonthewesternsideoftheCapePeninsula.ThefamousbronzestatuestandsontherockyoutcropatthefootofChapman’sPeakDrive,facingthemouthofHoutBayharbour.ItcommemoratestheseanimalsthatfreelyroamedtheHoutBayMountainsasrecentlyasthe1930s.ItwasagifttothepeopleofHoutBayfromsculptorIvanMidford---Barberton,thestatuehasbeenguardingthebayandfacingtheelementssinceMarch1963.
Rodin’sThinker
ItisthemostfamouspieceofartbytheFrenchsculptorAugustRodinin1917.Itissaidtobethestatuethatmostclearlyshowstheabstractideaofthoughtorthinking.“TheThinker”isponderingsointenselythatevenhistoesaretightlyclutchingtheground.Rodinoftenportrayedstrongcontrasts,asisshownbythissculpture,suchasthefinishedfigurecombinedwiththeunfinishedmarbleonwhichheisseated.TheoriginalisnowondisplayattheMetropolitanMuseumofArt.
