DespitethefactthatJacobandWilhelmGrimmareoftenassociatedwithSnowWhiteandRapunzel,thebrothersdidn’tactuallywriteanyofthosestories.Infact,thestoriesexistedlongbeforethetwomenwereborninGermanyinthemid1780s.Thefairytales,infact,werepartofarichoraltradition—passeddownfromgenerationtogeneration,oftenbywomenseekingtopassthetimeduringhouseholdchores.In1812,JacobandWilhelmpublishedthestoriesaspartofacollectiontitledNurseryandHouseholdTales,orwhatisnowknownasGrimm’sFairyTales.

TheGrimmbrothers’taleswereabouttraditionallifeandbeliefs.Forexample,forestsarecommoninGermany,andthisimageoftenappearsintheGrimms’stories.Inthepast,manypeoplebelievedforestsweredangerousplaces.IntheGrimms’stories,aforestisthehomeofevilwitches,talkinganimals,andothermagicalbeings.

Althoughmostpeopletodaythinkofthesestoriesasfairytalesforchildren,thebrothersfirstwrotethemforadults.Manyoftheirearlytalesweredarkandalittlescary.Later,thebrotherschangedthetextofsomeoftheoriginalstories.They"softened"manyofthetalesandaddeddrawings.Thismadethemmoreappropriate(合适的)forchildren.Liketheearlytales,though,eachstorystillhasamoral:
