DerekandJaneywereeatingjamroly-polyinthehallandtalkingaboutMrSuch’strousers.MrSuchwastheirteacherandheworethesametrouserstoschool,dayinanddayout.

‘They’resocrumpledandbaggy,’Janeysaid.

‘Andgrubbyandthick,’saidDerek.

‘Likeapairofolddish-cloths.’

‘Andhewearsthemallthetime.’

‘Idon’tthinkhe’sgotanyothers.’

‘OldBaggy-Pants,that’swhatheis,’Derekadded,stickinghisforkintohisjamroly-poly.

‘Iwishhe’dgetsomenewones,’Janeysighed.

AtthatmomentOldBaggy-Pantshimselfcameintothehall.Janey’smouthfellopenandDerekcouldseethemashedupjamroly-polyinside.

‘What’sup’hesaid.

Janeyblinkedandpointed.TherewasMrSuchinabrandnewsuit.Aspotlesswhitesuitwithoutacreaseinit.Everyoneinthehallstoppedeatingandstaredathim.

‘Carryon,everyone,’saidMrSuch,abitredintheface.’Carryoneating.’

‘Wow!

’saidDerek,leaningacrosshisplate.‘Helookssodifferent.’

LaterthatafternoonJaney’sclasstroopedbackimtothehallfor.

‘Ilikethesuit,sir,’JaneytoldMrSuchastheyfiledin.

Whiletheyweretalking,MrsVenncameoutofthekitchenwithabowlofcustardinherarms.

ShewassoshockedtoseeMrSuchinhisbrightnewsuitshegavealittlejump.‘Ohmygosh!

Shegrabbedoneofthehallcurtainstosteadyherself.Thecustardloopedintotheair,straightforMrSuch.

Dereksawitcomingandsteppedsmartlyintheway.ThecustardwobbledthroughtheairandfloppedagainstDerek’svest.Everyonefellsilent.Derekstoodthere,lookingsadandstunned.Andcoveredincoldcustard.

‘Welldone,Derek,’saidMrSuch.‘You’vesavedmybrandnewsuit.’

Derektriedtosmilebutbythenthecustardwasoozingintohisshorts.

Afterbreak,MrSuchchangedbackintohisdish-clothtrousers.

‘Pleasekeepclearofthis,’hesaid,hanginghisnewsuitonthecupboarddoor.‘Keepwellclear.’

ALovelygreencolour

Thelastlessonofthedaywasart.Theyhadtopaintinterestingfaces.Janeywasdoingamonster.Sheputblood–shotbitsinhiseyes,aboltthroughhisneckandgreenstuffcomingoutofhisnose.Shewaspleasedwiththegreenstuff,butshe’dmixeduptoomuch.SheaskedDerekifhewantedsome.

‘Idon’tneedanygreenstuff,Janey,’hesaid.‘I’mdoingafootballer.’

‘Well,hecouldhavegreenstuffcomingoutofhisnose,couldn’the’shesaid.

‘No,’saidDerek.‘Hecouldn’t.’

‘Youcoulduseitforthebackground.Likegrass.’

‘I’mnothavingmyfootballerrunningaroundongreenstufffromamonster’snose,thankyou,’saidDerek.

HenudgedJaney’selbow,andgreenstuffspilledoverthedesk.

Hetriedtostopittricklingontothefloor.

Thenhereachedbehindhimandrubbedhishandsonthetowel.Exceptthatitwasn’tthetowel.

‘Oh,’hesaidquietly.‘WhathaveIdone’

JaneycouldseewhathadhadwipedhishandsonMrSuch’snewtrousers.

‘You’vedoneitnow,’shesaid.‘OldBaggy-Pants’llgoupthewallwhenheseesthis.’

MrSuchwasontheothersideoftheroom.Helookedupandsmiledatthem.

‘Areyougettingonallright,youtwo’heasked.

‘Yes,thandyou,sir,’saidJaneybrightly.

Shegrabbedsomepaperandstartedtorubatthegreenmarks.

‘Youdaftclod,’saidDerek,‘you’remakingthemworse.They’retwiceasbignow.’

Theywere.JaneylookedatDerekandthoughthard.

‘There’sonlyonethingforitnow,’shesaid.

‘Putthembackonthehanger.Thenwecancleanthemupafterschool.’

WhenMrSuchcameovertolookattheirpictures,thesuitwasstillswingslightlyonthecupboarddoor.

‘Oh,’hesaid.‘Ilovethatshadeofgreen,Janey.That’salovelycolour.’

AthometimeMrSuchpotteredaroundforagesandwouldnotleavethemontheirown.Theystackedchairsasslowlyaschairshaveeverbeenstacked.Then,atlast,hewanderedofftothestaffroom.

Derekdartedovertothesinkandturnedonthetaps.Janeygrabbedthetrousersandflungthemacrosstheroomathim.Hecaughtthemandplungedthemintthesimk.Hegrabbedaplastcbottleandsquirtedithardatthetrousers.

‘Whatareyoudoing’Janeyyelled.

‘Washing-upliquid,’saidDerek.‘That’llgetstainsout.’

‘That’snotwashing-upliquid,Derek.That’sglue.’

AlmostatoncetheyheardMrSuchoutsidethedoor.Hecameinwearinghisanorakandcycleclips.DerekandJaneystoodsidebysideinfrontofthesink.

‘Oh,’saidMrSuch,‘Areyoustillhere’
