hopeswereover.Iwasshockedhowsuchasmallbookcouldcontainsuchacomplicatedstory.Neverwerewars,diseasesandstarvationevernakedlyexposedtomelikethis.Theturnsinplotsweresurprisingbutnatural.

Justasitsnamesuggested,everythingwasgonewiththewind,includingfamilies’touch,friends’support,sweethearts’gazeandyouthwithvigour.Thestoryremindsusofvaluingallwewerepossessing.Alifelastsforashorttimeandanythinginitlastsshorter.Wealwayslosesomethingunconsciouslyandthenfeelregretfulwhenweneedthemlater.

  Charactersinthestoryweresovividasiftheyhadbeengoingtojumpoutofthestory,asiftheyhadbeenexistedinthereallifeatfirst.

  “Landistheonlythingintheworldthatamountstoanything,for‘thistheonlythinginthisworldthatlasts,anddon’tyoubeforgettingit’thistheonlythingworthworkingfor,worthfightingfor——worthdyingfor.”SaidGerald,anIrishmanwholovedhissoilmorethanhisownlife,letusknowthatlifecanbebornoutofland.

  “ButScarlett,diditeveroccurtoyouthateventhemostdeathlesslovecouldwearout?
