Havingjustfinishedhighschool,Iwasn'
tsurewhatIwantedtostudyinhighereducation,soIdecidedtotakeagapyeartofigurethatout.
OneofmybiggestpassionshasalwaysbeenAfricaandIhavealwayswantedtodosomekindofvolunteering.However,Iwasafraidthat,especiallywhenitcomestovolunteeringinresearch,Iwouldn’tbeabletogointomuchdepthwiththeresearchIwouldbedoing.Ineedn’thaveworriedaboutthisinternship(实习期)though.IthasbeenperfectformebecausenotonlyamIdoingthesameactivitiesasalltheothervolunteersbutIalsogettodomyownresearchinadditiontothoseactivities.
TheinternshipprogramIamfollowingfocusesonbigpredators(食肉动物).Ihavedecidedtofocusoncheetahs(猎豹)formyindividualproject,collectingdataonthetwocheetahsthatliveinRietspruit,oneofthereservesthatAfricanImpactdoesresearchin.Withbothcheetahshavingonlybeenreintroducedintotheareathisyear,thereisstillalotofdatathatcanbecollectedonthepair.Largepredatorreintroductionisacommonstrategyusedtoreturntheseanimalstotheirhistoricrange.Theproblemisthatthesuccessratesofthesereintroductionsareverylow,mainlybecauseoflackinresearchdoneonhowdifferentfactorsinfluencethereintroduction.
BothcheetahsarewearingaGPS-collarfromwhichIcandownloadalotofinformationincludingwherethecheetahhasbeen,whattheweatherwaslikeandhowfarthecheetahtravelled.Havingorganizedandcategorizedtheinformation,Ihavebeenabletocreatesomeveryinterestinggraphs.
EventhoughitisquitedifficultsinceI’veneverdoneanyresearchlikethis,IreallyenjoyallthechallengesandproblemsIhavehadtofaceandsolve.AndI’mgladthatIcandosomethingtohelpwildlife.

Whenyoustartworkingonsomethingbutdon’tfinishit,thoughtsoftheunfinishedworkcontinuetojumpintoyourmindevenwhenyou’vemovedontootherthings.PsychologistsrefertothispsychologicalphenomenonastheZeigarnikeffect.TheeffectwasfirstobservedbyaRussianpsychologistnamedBlumaZeigarnik.WhilesittinginabusyrestaurantinVienna,shenotedthewaitershadbettermemoriesofunpaidorders.Oncethebillwaspaid,however,thewaitershaddifficultyrememberingtheexactdetailsoftheorders.
Inoneofherstudies,participantswereaskedtocompletesimpletaskssuchasputtingtogetherpuzzles,orsolvingmathproblems.Halfoftheparticipantswereinterruptedhalfwaythroughthesetasks.Afteranhour-longdelay,Zeigarnikaskedtheparticipantstogiveanaccountofwhatthey’dbeenworkingon.Shediscoveredthatthosewhohadtheirworkinterruptedweretwiceaslikelytorememberwhattheyhadbeendoingasthosewhohadactuallycompletedthetasks.
Wecanusethiseffecttoouradvantage.Forexample,ifyou’restrugglingtomemorizesomethingimportant,momentaryinterruptionsmightactuallyworktoyouradvantage.Ratherthansimplyremembertheinformationoverandoveragain,reviewitseveraltimesandthentakeabreak.Whileyou’refocusingonotherthings,you’llfindyourselfmentallyreturningtotheinformationyouwerestudying.
Weoftenputofftasksuntilthelastmoment,onlycompletingtheminarushatthelastpossiblemoment.Unfortunately,thistendencycanleadtoheavystressandevenpoorper
