Inthelate1860s,acreativeengineernamedJohnA.RoeblingwasinspiredbyanideatobuildabridgeconnectingNewYorkwithLongIsland.However,bridgebuildingexpertsthroughouttheworldthoughtthatthiswasimpossible.

Roeblingcouldnotignorethevisionofthisbridge.Hethoughtaboutitallthetimeandheknewdeepinhisheartthatitcouldbedone.Hejusthadtosharethedreamwithsomeoneelse.AftermuchdiscussionandpersuasionhemanagedtoconvincehissonWashington,anupandcomingengineer,thatthebridgeinfactcouldbebuilt.

Thefatherandsondevelopedconceptsofhowitcouldbeaccomplishedandhowtheobstaclescouldbeovercome.Withgreatexcitementandinspiration,andthedeterminationofmeetingchallenges,theyhiredtheircrewandbegantobuildtheirdreambridge.

Theprojectstartedwell,butwhenitwasonlyafewmonthsunderwayatragicaccidentonsitetookthelifeofJohnA.Roebling.Washingtonwasinjuredandleftwithacertainamountofbraindamage,whichresultedinhimnotbeingabletowalkortalkorevenmove.
