2.GeneralDescription
2.1.Point-to-PointLinkOverview
Theserialinfraredlinksupportsopticallinklengthsfromzerotoatleast1meterwithstandardpowertransceivers(20cmforlowpowertransceivers:
seesection4.1)foraccurate(withinspecifiedbiterrorratio),freespacecommunicationbetweentwoindependentnodes(suchasacalculatorandaprinter,ortwocomputers).
2.2.Environment
TheOpticalInterfaceSpecificationsapplyoverthelifeoftheproductandovertheapplicabletemperaturerangefortheproduct.BackgroundlightandelectricfieldtestconditionsarepresentedinAppendixA.
2.3.ModulationSchemes
Fordataratesuptoandincluding1.152Mbit/s,RZImodulationschemeisused,anda
“0”isrepresentedbyalightpulse.Forratesuptoandincluding115o2ks,theopticalpulsedurationisnominally3/16ofabitduration(or3/16ofa115.2kbit/sbitduration).ForO.576Mbit/sand1.152Mbit/s,theopticalpulsedurationisnominally1/4ofabitduration.
For4.0Mbit/s,themodulationschemeis4PPM.Init,apairofbitsistakentogetherandcalledadatasymbol.Itisdividedinto4“chips”,onlyoneofwhichcontainsan
pulse.For4.0Mbit/s,thenominalpulseduration(chipduration)is125ns.A“1”representedbyalightpulse.
For16.0MbiL匕transmission,theHHH(1,13)codeQalowdulycycle,rate2\(dk)—(1,13)runlengthlimited(RLL)codeZisusedastlicmodulationcodetoachievethe
specifieddatarate.TheHHH(1,13)codeguaranteesforatleastoneemptychipandatmost13emptychipsbetweenchipscontainingpulsesinthetransmittedIRsignal.
The16.0Mbit/sratepacketframestructureisbasedonthecurrentIrDA-FIR(4.0Mbit/s)frameformatwithmodificationsintroducedwherenecessarytoaccommodatetherequirementsthatarespecifictothenewmodulationcode.Furthermore,theHHH(1,13)codeisenhancedwithasimplescrambling/descramblingschemetofurtheroptimizethedutycycle.

3.2.OpticalAngleDefinitions
Theopticalaxisisassumedtobenormaltothesurfaceofthenode'
sfacethatcontainstheopticalport(SeeFigure3).Forconvenience,thecenteroftheopticalportistakenasthereferencepointwheretheopticalaxisexitstheport.Ifthereisasymmetry,aslongasthemaximumhalfangleofthedistributionisnotgreaterthantheallowableHalf-AngleRangemaximum,andtheminimumhalfangleofthedistributionisnotlessthantheHalf-AngleRangeminimum,theHalf-AngleRangespecificationismet.
