Telluswhathappenedwhenyouwerenineyearsold.

HewasflyingtoOklahomawiththreeguysthatmymothersaid,“Idon’twantyoutohaveanythingtodowiththem,Idon’ttrustthosemen.”That’swhenIheard,maybenotforthefirsttime,“Stifleyourself,Jeanette,I’mgoing.”Andhewent.Itturnsouthewaspickingupsomefakebonds,whichhewasflyingacrossthecountrytosell.ButthefactthathewasgoingtoOklahomainaplane,andhewasgoingtobringmebacka10-gallonhat,justlikeKenMaynard,myfavoritecowboywore.Youknow,thiswasafewyearsafterLindberghcrossedtheAtlantic.Imean,itwasexoticthatmyfatherwasgoingthere.Butwhenhecameback,theyarrestedhimashegotofftheplane.

  Thatnightnewspaperswerealloverthehouse,myfatherwaswithhishatinfrontofhisface,manacledtoadetective.Andmymotherwassellingthefurniture,becausewewereleaving--shedidn’twanttostayinthatstateofshame,inChelsea,Massachusetts.Andsellingthefurniture--thehousewasloadedwithpeople.

  Andinthemiddleofallofthat,somestrangehorse’sassputhishandonmyshoulderandsaid,“Well,you’rethemanofthehousenow.”I’mcrying,andthisassholesays,“You’rethemanofthehousenow.”AndIthinkthatwasthemomentIbegantounderstandthefoolishnessofthehumancondition.So...ittookalotofyearstolookbackatitandfeelitwasabenefit.But--

Soyouhaveafatherwho’sabsent,youhaveamotherforwhomapparentlynothingisgoodenough.Doyouthinkthatstartingoutasakidwhomaybeneverfeltheardstartedyoudownajourneythatendedwithyoubeinganadultwithaweeklyaudienceof120millionpeople?

Ilovethewayyouputthatquestion,becauseIguessI’vespentmylifewanting--ifanything,wantingtobeheard.Ithink--It’sasimpleanswer,yes,thatwaswhatsparked--well,therewereotherthings,too.Whenmyfatherwasaway,Iwasfoolingwithacrystalradiosetthatwehadmadetogether,andIcaughtasignalthatturnedouttobeFatherCoughlin.

  Butnotfunny,thiswasahorse’s--anotherhorse’sass--whowasveryvocalabouthatingtheNewDealandRooseveltandJews.ThefirsttimeIranintoanunderstandingthattherewerepeopleinthisworldthathatedmebecauseIwasborntoJewishparents.Andthathadanenormouseffectonmylife.

Soyouhadachildhoodwithlittleinthewayofstrongmalerolemodels,exceptforyourgrandfather.Tellusabouthim.

Oh,mygrandfather.Wellhere’sthewayIalwaystalkedaboutthatgrandfather.Therewereparades,lotsofparadeswhenIwasakid.TherewereparadesonVeteran’sDay--therewasn’taPresident’sDay.TherewasAbrahamLincoln’sbirthday,GeorgeWashington’sbirthdayandFlagDay...Andlotsoflittleparades.Mygrandfatherusedtotakemeandwe’dstandonthestreetcorner,he’dholdmyhand,andI’dlookupandI’dseeatearrunningdownhiseye.Andhemeantagreatdealtome.

  AndheusedtowritepresidentsoftheUnitedStates.Everyletterstarted,“Mydearest,darlingMr.President,”andhe’dtellhimsomethingwonderfulaboutwhathedid.ButwhenhedisagreedwiththePresident,healsowrote,“Mydearest,darlingMr.President,Didn’tItellyoulastweek...?

  AndIwouldrundownthestairseverynowandthenandpickupthemail.Wewerethreeflightsup,74YorkStreet,NewHaven,Connecticut.AndI’dpickupalittlewhiteenvelopereading,“ShyaC.calledatthisaddress.”Andthat’sthestoryIhavetoldaboutmygrandfather--

Theywrotehimbackontheenvelopes--

Theywroteback.ButIhaveshownthemmyself,goingwaybacktoPhilDonahueandothersbeforehim,literallydozensofinterviewsinwhichItoldthatstory.ThiswillbethesecondtimeIhavesaidthewholestorywasalie.Thetruthwasmygrandfathertookmetoparades,wehadlotsofthose.Thetruthisatearcamedownhiseye.

  Thetruthishewouldwriteanoccasionalletter,andIdidpickupthoselittleenvelopes.But“MydearestdarlingMr.President,”alltherestofit,isastoryIborrowedfromagoodfriendwhosegrandfatherwasthatgrandfatherwhowrotethoseletters.And,Imean,IstoleArthurMarshall’sgrandfatherandmadehimmyown.Always.

“EvenThisIGettoExperience.”WhenIstartedtowritethememoirandIstartedtothinkaboutit,andthenI--I--Ididareasonableamountofcrying,andIrealizedhowmuchIneededthefather.SomuchsothatIappropriatedArthurMarshall’sgrandfather.Somuchso,theword“father”--Ihavesixkidsbytheway.Myfavoriteroleinlife.Itandhusbandtomy
