CharlesDickens
CharlesDickens(1812-1870)wasborninLondon.Hisfatherwasputinprisonbecausehecouldnotpayhisbills,andtwodaysafterhis13thbirthday,Dickensstartedworkinafactory,experiencingrealpoverty.Asayoungman,heworkedfornewspapersandasapoliticaljournalist,hemetallkindsofpeople.Usingalltheseexperiences,Dickensstartedwritingnovelsinhisearlythirtiesandbecamesuccessfulalmostimmediately.
OliverTwist,hissecondnovel,whichwaspublishedin1838,washugelysuccessful.IttoldthestoryofayoungorphanaloneinthedangerousstreetsofLondon.Thestoryendshappily---theyoungboydiscoverswhohisrealparentsareandfindsalovinghome.However,itbroughtchildpovertytotheattentionofthepublic,andforthisreasonaloneitisaveryimportantnovel.
Overthenext25years,hewrotealargenumberofpopularnovelsthatarestillreadtoday.Dickensoftenwroteabouttheproblemsofpoorpeople,andasaresultofhiswork,thelivesofthepoorwereimproved.
