ItfollowedsuccesseswithfilmssuchasNorthbyNorthwest,madein1959,whichstarredCaryGrantinaprototype007role,andPsycho,madethefollowingyear,whichbecamefamousforitsspinechillingshowermurder.Nownotesandotherdocumentsleft“bythemasterofsuspense”haveshownthatHitchcockwasnotcontenttorestonthereputationearnedbysuchclassicsandwasplanningtoreinventhimselfattheageof68.

Kaleidoscopewouldhavefeaturedahandsomepsychopathandhisfemalepursuer.Theplotwasbasedonthetrue-lifestoryofNevilleHeath,asadistic28-year-oldRAFofficerhangedin1946forthesexualassaultandsavagemurderoftwoyoungwomen.

Filmexpertswhohaveseenthedetailednotesandpreliminaryfootagesaytheyshow“Hitch”wasthinkingofideasthatwereyearsaheadoftheirtime,andanticipatingtheapproachofmoviesmadeinthelate1960sand1970ssuchasEasyRiderandMeanStreets.

FourreelsoffilmwereshotinafeasibilitystudybutthentheentireprojectwasscupperedbyexecutivesasUniversalStudioswhosaiditwastoodrasticachangeindirection.

Thereels,alongwithHitchcock'

swrittendescriptionsofthefilm,werefoundbyDanAuiler,afilmhistorianwhowassiftingthroughthehugecollectionofpapersthatHitchcock'

sdaughterPatriciadonatedtotheAcademyofMotionPictureArtsandSciencesinLosAngles.“IfKaleidoscopehadbeenreleaseditcouldhavebeen

ThepreliminaryreelswereshotinNewYorkin1967.Afterediting,therewasabout10minutesofscreentime.Thefirstsceneshowsanudemodelinherapartmentandthesecond,inanartist'

sstudio,showstheyoungkillermeetingthemodel.Inabreakwithtradition,Hitchcock,whoturnedCaryGrantandGraceKellyintoscreenheartthrobs,proposedusingunknownactors.
