tjustsayphonecallsbecause,ofcourse,onceyougetsoftwareinthemix,thecapabilitiesgowaybeyondwhatanybodythinksoftodaywhenwethinkofphonecalls.Butreallythemilestonethatwe'

reatisthatwe'

refinallybringingtothisideaoftryingtogetincontactwithsomebody,knowingwhatnumbertocall,knowinghowtoconnectmanypeopletogether,knowingwhenthey'

reavailable,we'

rebringingthemagicofsoftware.

Infact,thisisacompletetransformationofthebusinessofthetraditionalPBX.ThePBXinsomewaysisalmostlikethemainframewasmanyyearsagowhereallofthefunctionalitywasthereinthatonepiece.Andthewaythatyouhadflexibilitytoaddvalue,tocustomize,tobringinthirdpartiestodonewthings,itjustisn'

Well,wehavesomeverybigmegatrends.Wehavetheincredibleperformanceimprovementsinhardware,themagicofMoore'

sLaw,thatexponentialimprovementwherethechipsgettwiceasmanytransistorsevery18months.Itmeansthatthespeedofyournetworkcontinuestogoup.Infact,thepeoplewhoputinformationonopticfiberseenolimitinsighttotheconstantimprovementtheymake.Soyou'

vegotthecapacityinthenetwork.

Theperformanceofthecomputersintermsofdoingthingsliketakingandprocessingthevideo,orprocessingtheaudio,wenowhavethefullcapacitytodothat.Sohardwareisnotholdingusbackatall.Infact,you'

thappening,findnewwaystomakethoseconnections,sowegetextremereliability.Andthenfinallytheenddevicesthemselves,theportablecomputersyoutakeeverywhere.PCsalesaregrowing,butportablePCsalesaregrowingasashareofPCsales.Sonotonlythephonesthemselvesbeingfar,farbetter,buttheWindowsPCthatyou'

vegotwithyouontheroadalsobeingfarmorepervasiveandfarbetterthanitwas.Sothesearethetrendsthatwebuildoninordertobeabletosaythatnowisthetimewhencommunicationswillberevolutionized.

Sostartingwiththephonecall,butbringinginscreensharing,bringinginvideo,bringingincollaboration,bringingintheabilitytoputeveninabusinessapplicationtherichnessofthisunifiedcommunication.

Wecanlookaroundourofficeandsay,there'

salotofchangesthathavetakenplace.Ifyougoback30years,thecomputerof30yearsagowaseitherhiddenawayinthedatacenter,oritwasakitcomputer.I'

veshowntheretheAltair,that'

sthecomputerthatgotmetodropoutofschool.Looksgood,it'

sgotswitches,andlights,andithadpapertape.Veryimpressive.Soyou'

dhavetosaythatevenevery10yearsorsowhatyouthinkaboutthatpersonalcomputerhasbeenverydifferent.In1987,bythentheIBMPCstylewithMS-DOSwasstandard,socalled16-bitcomputing.By1997,thegraphicuserinterfacehadcomein,andtheInternetwasstartingtobecentralphenomena.Andherein2007,we'

restartingtogetspeechandvideoandinkandthingsthatgowaybeyondevenjust10yearsago.

Likewisewithyourmobilephone,30yearsagoonlyafewpeoplehadthesehugebriefcasethings.Tenyearslater,thefirstbigdevicecameout.Andthenin1997,youcouldsaythingsliketheMotorola（Starpack?

）reallybroughtmobiletelephonyintothemainstream.Andtodaywehavedevicesthathavelittlekeyboards,andcameras,andthat'

sprettyphenomenalthesoftwarerevolutionthat'

stakingplaceonthosemobilephonedevices.Infact,thekeyplayersinthatmobilephonebusinessovertimearemorelikelytobepeoplewhoaregreatatdoingsoftware.It'

snotjustthehardwareofconnectingupavoicecall,it'

salotmorebecausethat'

sthedeviceyoucarrywithyou.

Incontrasttothegreatinnovationwe'

veseenwiththePCinthatmobilephone,considerthebusinessphonethatyou'

vegotinyouroffice.Itstilllooksprettymuchthesame.Mostofthemhave,iftheyhaveanydisplayatall,it'

safairlysmalldisplay.Theydohavealotofbuttons,andyoulookatthosebuttonsandsay,wow,Iwonderwhousesthosebuttons?

Thesethings,becauseit'

ssoopaquewhat'

sgoingon,andbecauseyoudon'

tlikedroppingaphonecall,peoplereallydon'

tevenusethefeaturesthat'

sthere.It'

skindoffrozen,andthere'

snothingathirdpartycoulddotomakeitricher,ortomakeitbetter.Soitreallyjumpsoutastheelementinourlifeofrichdigitalcommunicationsasthethingthatneedstobechanged,anditcanbechanged.

Wesurveyedpeoplerecentlyabouthowtheythinkaboutthatdeskphone,andwefoundthatoneinthreehavesuccessfullytransferredaphonecall.Nowthat'

sthemostbasicfunctionalityyoucanimagine.Evenlesspeoplehavebeensuccessfulatsettingupastandardkindofconferencecall.Sothebuttons,addingthebuttons,andallthat,that'

sjustnotgoingtowork.InthePCworld,withthingslikeExchangeandActiveDirectory,theideaofknowingwhoanemployeeis,theirrelationshiptootherpeople,beingabletofigureoutwhatinformationthey'

regrantedaccessto,thisideaofadirectoryasanimportanttoolinthecompany,havinggroupsandthingslikethat,hasbecomemainstream.WhilethePBXhasstoodoutbyitself,wherethatdirectory,intermsofkeepingituptodate,managingit,hasbeenvery,verydifferent.Sothishasbeeninitsownworld,nottouchedbythemagicofsoftware.Sothatcentralpowerofinnovation,softwareinnovationisbeingbroughttothebusinessphoneexperience.

Now,thisisalsonotjustatechnologicalchange,butit'

sachangeinthebusinessstructuresothattheopportunityforpeopletocomeinanddonewthingsismuchlarger.Intheolderworldeverythingchangedinakindofverticallyintegratedcommunicationsstack.Thepersonyouboughttheserverfrom,thepersonyouboughtthedirectorysoftwarefrom,thepersonyouboughttheapplicationsfrom,thepersonyouboughtthehardwaredevicethatsatonthedesk,thatwasonecompany.Andthatmodelworkedjustfine,becausethepiecesworkedtogether,andthiswasafairlylargemarket.

But,itmeantthatonceyoupickedoneofthosePBXvendors,thatwasit.And,infact,oftenthebusinessmodeltherewasthateveniftheydidn'

tmakealotofmoneyonthatinitialsale,thingshavingtodowith,oh,youwanttomoveaphone,nowwe'

retalking,nowwecanmakesomemoneyoffofyou,becauseyouwanttomovethatphone.ForMicrosoftjusttosetup,say,anewofficewithaphonewasoverUS$700,andtheleadtimewasaboutaweek.

Sothatactuallybecameacriticaltask.Wemovepeoplearoundalot,aswe'

regettingpeopleworkingtogetherindifferentgroupsandthingslikethat,it'

sarealpointoffrustration,becausewethinkofitasjust,hey,it'

sanentryinthedirectory.Youtypeintheirnewofficenumber,andtellthemtowalkoverthere,andthatshouldjustbedone.But,becauseofthewaythishaditsownnetwork,itsowndirectory,itsown 

evenwiring,thewayitwasconnectedtogether,therewasn'

tmuchyoucoulddo.Andsopeoplejustaccepteditinthatform.

Sohowisthatgoingtochangeawayfromaverticalmodel?

Well,theansweristhatwe'

veseenthisbefore.Thisisjustlikethecomputerindustrywasbeforethepersonalcomputercamealong.AndthechangeagentstherewereMicrosoft,asasoftwareplatform,Intelandtheotherchipcompaniesthattookthemagicofdoingthehardwarepieceandbroughtthatdowntothechiplevel,didafantasticjobonthat.Soitbecameahorizontallyorientedstructure.
