  WaldenisamasterpiecewrittenbyHenryDavidThoreau(1817⑴862),whowasborninConcord,Massachusetts.Theagehelivedhadwitnessedtheflourishofcapitalismaswellastheprosperityofindustrializationandurbanization.Duringthe19thcentury,theAmericaneconomydevelopedatsofastratethatmostpeoplewereboundupinpursuingthematerialsatisfaction,whileingoredthespirituallifetoagreatextent.ButThoreauwasquitedifferentfromotherpeople,hedisdainedthemoderncivilizationandattachedmoreimportancetothespiritthanthematerial.Hethoughtmanypeopleofhistimelivedinanon-human-likemodernsocietyandmanymodernappliances,suchastrainsandtelegraphs,haddoneharmtopeople'sharmoniouslifepeaceandalsobrokentherelationshipbetweenhumanandnature.

  Inordertoprovethatwithoutthemoderninstruments,peoplecanalsoliveahappylife,in1845,hemovedintoacabinontheshoreofWaldenPondandlivetherealonefortwoyearstogetclosetothenature.Walden,isthefamousbookmainlytalksabouthislifeandthoughtsduringthosedayslivinginthewoods.

  ThoreauwassohappywiththelifelivingnearthelakeofWaldenthathefeltitasweetgracetohavethenature'accompanyandeventhesoundsofrainandthesightsaroundhishousewerefullofsincerefriendship.Inhiseyes,thenaturewasanintimatefriendofhimandallthingsinthenaturewerelivelyandvivacious.Andallkindsofanimalsinthewood,suchasfieldmouses,robinsandwildrabbitswereamicablytreatedandregardedashisadorablecompanions.Heeventhoughtthatplantswerealsohadtherighttoliveequalwithhumanbeings.Justbecauseofthis,heevenblamedhimselfforhittingchestnuttreeswithstones.Frommanywordsorsentences,wecaneasilyfeelThoreau'sdeeploveandcaretowardsnature.

  Besides,Thoreauwasapioneeringnaturelover,whocalledonpeopletostopdestoryingnaturebutprotectitbysettinghimselfanexampletoothers.Theconsciousnessoftheenvironmentalprotectionisbecomingmoreandmoreimportantinourmodernsociety,whilethewholeworldistrappedinsomeseriousecologicalcrisisesresultingfromhuntingandkillinganimals,cuttingdowntreesandpollutingtheriversforpursuitofhumanbeings'owninterests.Weallhavethecommonsensethatthenumberofwildlifeisdecreasing,theareaoflakeisshrinking,andthewaterisnotclearanymore.What'sworse,environmentproblemssuchasglobewarming,climatechangeandairandwaterpollutionaredeterioratingduringthecommercialprocess.Soit'shightimethatweshouldrealizeweneverbethedominatorofthewholeworldconquringnature,butshouldsparenoeffortstoimprovetheenvironmentrightaway.Thatis,weshouldcomplywiththenaturallaws,makereasonableutilizationofnaturalresourcesandkeeptheharmoniousdevelopmentbetweenthesocietyandtheenvironment.Onlyinthiswaywillwehasanopportunitytoembraceabrightfutureandachieveasustainablesociety.

  Inthebook,Walden,Thoreaunotonlyadvocatedtheprotectionofnature,butalsoencouragepeopletocomprehendandreturntonature.Hetoldususinghisownexperiencethatbylivingasimplelifeclosetonature,wehumanbeingswillfindoutthetruevalueoflifeandsignificanceofexistence.

  Afterreadingthebook,whatimpressedmemostisthedescriptionofthefascinatingsceneryaroundtheWaldenpound,especiallythesesentences:

"Alakeisthelandscape'smostbeautifulandexpressivefeature.Itisearth'seye;lookingintowhichthebeholdermeasuresthedepthofhisownnature.Thefluviatiletreesnexttheshorearetheslendereyelasheswhichfringeit,andthewoodedhillsandcliffsaroundareitsoverhangingbrows".ToThoreau,theWaldenlakeislikeacharmingandmeltinggirl,whohasslendereyelashesandlikestodressherselfindifferentbeautifulclotheswiththechangesofdifferentseasons.

  Everymorningaftergettingup,ThoreauwouldhaveabathintheWaldenlaketostartanewday.Afterthat,heusedtowanderaroundthepondandrefreshhimselfwiththefreshair.Insummerdays,hecultivatedapieceoflandandgrowedbeans,blackberries,johnswortsandthelike.ThedepictionofhisleisureruralityspontaneouslyremindsmeofTaoYuanming,thefamousChinesepoet,wholivedintheJinDynastyandmadehislifemeaningfulbyreturningtothenatureandperfectinghimself.IfThoreauandTaoYuanminglivedinthesameperiodandplace,theywouldprobablybecomebestfriends.

  Fromthebook,weknowthatduringtheyearswhenThoreaulivedneartheWalden,hedidnotcompletelyisolatehimselffromtheoutsideworld.Sometimeshewenttothetownanddidoddjobsandwouldreceivevisitorsandfriendsinhiscabinattimes.AsImentionbefore,theintentionforhislivinginthewoodswasthathewantedtoteachpeoplehowtoliveasimplelife,achieveenjoymentfromthenature,freeoneselffromthestraineddailylifeandwhatismoreimportantistoreevaluatethevalueofsociallife.

  Thoreau'sthoughofenjoyingasimplelifehasamorerealisticsignificanceandhavebecomeavaluablespiritualwealthinourmodernsociety.Withthedevelopmentofthematerialcivilization,people'sdesiresareswellinglimitlesslyandmanypeoplearebusywiththepursuitofwealthandluxuriouslifebyanymeans,includingattheexpenseofnature.However,eveninthesocietymateriallyaffluentandtechnologicallyadvanced,peoplearenotbemorehappierthanthosepeoplewholivedcenturiesago,butevenfeellesssatisfactoryandcomplaintmoreabouttheirpresentlifeasaresultofhavingunboundeddesiresofgettingmoreandbetter.Therefore,manypeoplewhopossessalathavebecomeslavesofmachine,workingmorebutdonothavetheabilitytoenjoywhattheyhave.

  WhenHenryDavidThoreau(1817⑴862)setoutfortheWaldenwoodsinMassachusettsonIndependenceDay,1845,theUnitedStateswasstillayoungnation.Thebookthathepublishedin1854,Walden,isbaseduponhisexperiencesasayouth.

  1845年美国独立日那天,亨利·戴维·梭罗出发前往位于马萨诸塞州的瓦尔登湖畔的树林,那时美国还是一个年轻的国家。

1854年出版的《瓦尔登湖》,即是他基于自己年轻时的经历所著。

他其实不喜欢工厂,也不喜欢它们生产的东西。

他回绝消费主义,疑心它会将人们带离他们真正关心的事情。

男男女女都生活在“沉寂的绝望”之中,因为现代生活将他们引入歧途。

正如他在该书开篇所写“我到林中去,因为我希望慎重地生活,只面对生活的基本事实,看看我是否学得到生活要教育我的东西,免得到了临终之时,才发现我根本就没有生活过。

  我们不该认为梭罗只是在逃避现实世界。

他前往瓦尔登湖,不单单是为了凝视湖面,观察野生动物。

他去那儿是因为他对现代文明感到腻烦。
