Despitewhattheletterwritermighthavewished,thereisnodefinitionofeducationthatisagreeduponbyall,orevenmost,educators.Themeaningstheyattachtothewordarecomplexbeliefsarisingfromtheirownvaluesandexperiences.Totheextentthatthosebeliefsdiffer,theexperienceofstudentsintoday'
sclassroomscanneverbethesame.Worse,manyeducatorshaveneverbeenaskedtostatetheirbeliefs—oreventoreflectonwhattheybelieve.Attheveryleast,teachersoweittotheirstudentstobringtheirdefinitionsintoconsciousnessandexaminethemforvalidity.
PurposesandFunctions
Tomakemattersmorecomplicated,theoristshavemadeadistinctionbetweenthepurposeofeducationandthefunctionsofeducation.
