Before1959,onlytwo-pointseatbeltswereavailable,andtheonlypeoplewhooftenworethemwereracecardrivers.Thetwo-pointseatbeltcouldn’tprotectpassengersfrominternalinjuries(内伤)duringseriouscaraccidents.
In1958,BohlinjoinedVolvoCarcorporationasasafetyengineer.Hecameupwiththethree-pointseatbelttoKeeppassengersfromflyingoutoftheircarsduringcollisions.Thethree-pointseatbeltusedonestrap(带子)acrossthechest(胸部)andanotheracrossthelegsandthenthetwojoinedatthesameplace.Amazingly,thiswasaverysimpleideawhichnoonehadtriedbefore.
Thethree-pointseatbeltwasintroducedonVolvocarsin1959.Formorepeople’ssafety,Volvomadethenewseatbeltdesignavailabletoothercarmakersforfree.Sincethen,engineershaveworkedtoimprovethethree-pointseatbelt,butthebasicdesignremainsBohlin’s.
