Myfriend,whoeverthouart,thatwithsomucheaseshaltreceivethebenefitofmyhardstudies,anddothintendtoproceedinthisheavenlyknowledgeofthestars,whereinthegreatandadmirableworksoftheinvisibleandalgloriousGodaresomanifestlyapparent.Inthefirstplace,considerandadmirethyCreator,andbethankfuluntohim,bethouhumble,andletnonaturalknowledge,howprofoundandtranscendentsoeveritbe,elatethymindetoneglectthatdivineProvidence,bywhoseall-seeingorderandappointment,allthingsheavenlyandearthly,havetheirconstantmotion,butthemorethyknowledgeisenlarged,themoredothoumagnifiethepowerandwisdomofAlmightyGod,andstrivetopresevethyselfinhisfavour;

IhaveoftinmyformerWorkshintedthemanyfearsIhadofthatdangerIwasnaturallyliketobeintheyear1647,asanymayread,eitherinmyEpistlebeforetheConjunctionofSaturnandJupiter,printed1644.Orinpagetherof108,asintheEpistleofAglicus
1645,whereyoushallfindethesewords:
Ihaverunovermoredaysthensixteenthousandfivehundredfiftyandnine,beforeIamsixteenthousandfourhundredtwentytwodaysold,Ishallbeingreathazardofmylife,butthatyearwhichafflictsmewillstaggeraMonarchandKingdom,&
c..Whatconcernsmyself,hathalmostinfullmeasureprovedtrue,in1647.HavinginthisuntowardyearbeenmolestedwithpalpitationoftheHeart,withHypoconarymelancholy,adisaffectedSpleen,theScurvy,etc.andnowatthispresentviz.August1647,whenIhadalmostconcludedthisTreatise,IamshutupofthePlague,havingthe4thofAugustburiedoneServantthereof,andonthe28.Ofthesamemonethanother,myselfandremainderofmyFamilyenforcestoleavemypresentseat,andbetakemyselftochangeofayre;

c.itaquaintshimhowtoerectafigureofheaven,howthereintoplacethePlanets,howtorectifietheirmotionstothehourofhisFigure;
itunfoldsthenatureoftheHouses,ofthePlanets,oftheSignsoftheZodiack,theirdivision,andsubdivision,theirseverallproperties,termsofArt,andwhateverelseisfitforLearnertoknowbeforeheenteruponjudgment;
untowhomandeveryonethatwillbestudiousthisway,Igivethesecautions.
First,thathebeveryexactinknowingtheuseofhisEphemeris,andinsettingaScheamofHeavenforallthehouseofthedayornight,andinreducingthemotionsofthePlanetstothehourthereofwhenneedrequireth,andtoknowtheircharactersdistinctlyandreadily.
Secondly,IwouldhavetheStudentveryperfectinknowingthenatureoftheHouses,thathemaythebetterdiscoverfromwhathousetorequirejudgmentuponthequestionpropounded,leftforwantoftrueunderstandinghemistakeonethingforanother.
Thirdly,Iwouldhavehimreadyin,andwelltounderstandtheDebilitiesandFortitudesofeveryPlanet,bothEssentiallandAccidentall.
Fourthly,hemustbewellversedindiscoveringtheNatureoftheSignificator,whathesignifiesnaturally,whataccidentally,andhowtovarysignification,asnecessityshallrequire.
Fifthly,lethimwellunderstandthenatureoftheSigns,theirpropertiesandqualities,andwhatform,shapeandconclusionstheygiveofthemselvesnaturally,andwhatbythepersonallexistenceofaPlanetinanyofthem.
Sixthly,thathebereadyinthe,shapeanddescriptionwhicheveryPlanetdesignes,andhowtovarytheirshapeastheyarepositedinSignandhouse,oraspectedoftheMOONoranyotherPlanet.
Seventhly,hemustoftreadthetermesofArt,andhavethemfreshinhismemory,andespeciallythetwentiethandoneandtwentiethChaptersofthefirstBook.
IfGodAlmightyshallpreservemylife,Imaythereforeaddemanythings,andmuchlightuntothisArt,andthereforeIdesiretheStudentsherein,thatIftheymeetwithanyextraordinarycasualtyintheirpractice,theywouldcommunicateituntome.
