simportantforthebirdstoarriveatthepropertimeinthespring,becausetheyneedtotimetheirarrivalwiththeinsectemergence.Sotheyneedtobeheretoestablishtheirnestingsites,laytheireggs.Onetheeggshatch,theyhavetheirbabybirds,sotheyneedtotimeitwhentheinsectsaremostabundant.
Napolihasbegunanalyzingabout76,000observationsofsongbirdmigrationdatescollectedbySmileyandhisteamtoseeifthey,too,showthatclimatechangehasalteredthetimingofmigrations.Herresultssuggestthattheydo.
Napolifoundthatshort-distancemigrantsthatspendtheirwintersinthesouthernU.S.nowarriveanaverageofelevendaysearlierthantheydidinthe1930s.Long-distancemigrantsthatoverwinterinthetropicsarriveroughlyaweekearlier.NapolipresentedherresultsatarecentEcologicalSocietyofAmericameetinginPortland,Oregon.
