Introduction

TheGlobale-SustainabilityInitiative(GeSI)isajointinitiativeofaninternationalgroupofInformationandCommunicationsTechnology(ICT)serviceprovidersandsuppliers,withthesupportoftheUnitedNationsEnvironmentProgrammeandInternationalTelecommunicationUnion.GeSIseekstocontributetosustainabledevelopmentintheICTindustrybytakingaleadershiproleincollaborativeexplorationandresponsiblemanagementoftheevolvinginterfacesamongindustrial,ecological,andsocialsystems.InformationaboutGeSImembersandongoingactivitiescanbefoundatwww.gesi.org.

ICTsectorcompaniesareworkingtogethertoimprovethepracticeofsustainabilityandsocialresponsibilitywithintheirsupplychains.Tothisend,theGeSISupplyChainWorkingGrouphasteamedwiththeElectronicIndustryCodeofConduct(EICC)ImplementationGroupandothergroupstodevelopasetoftoolsthatsatisfybroadindustryneeds.Thesetoolsincludethisquestionnaire,ariskassessmenttool,acommonapproachtoauditing,andadditionalweb-basedresources.DeploymentanduseofthisSelfAssessmentQuestionnaireisexpectedtobenefitbothindustrialcustomersandtheirsuppliersby:

∙Raisingsupplierawarenessabouttheimportanceofsustainabilityprinciples

∙ClarifyingICTcustomerexpectationsregardingtheirsuppliers’sustainabilitypractices

∙SupportingICTcustomerassessmentsofsuppliercharacteristicsandpotentialrisks

∙Enablingsupplierstoevaluate,improve,andcommunicatetheirperformance

∙Reducingtheburdenonsuppliersofrespondingtomultiplequestionnaires.

Thequestionnairehasbeendesignedfordeploymentonasecurewebsiteintheformofanonlineself-assessmenttool.TheinformationobtainedthroughthisinstrumentwillbeusedbyICTcompaniesasameanstobetterunderstandthepracticesoftheirsuppliersandtoidentifypotentialrisksorperformancegaps.Becauseofthecomprehensivenatureofthequestionnaire,itmayprovideamodelforotherindustrygroupsgrapplingwithsimilarissues.

Thequestionnairewasdesignedwiththreemajorcriteriainmind:

∙Easeofuseforbothsuppliersandrecipientsoftheinformation

∙ValueofinformationforpurposesofICTcompanyneeds

∙Suitabilityforsubsequentweb-baseddeployment.

ThisquestionnaireisenvisionedaspartofabroadercommunicationprocessbetweenICTsuppliersandcustomers.Itisintendedasaninitialscreeningtooltohelpidentifylabour,ethics,health,safetyorenvironmentalissuesthatmayrequiremorein-depthexplorationinthecontextofsupplierauditsorotherinteractions.Therefore,inanefforttokeepthelengthreasonable,thequestionnairedeliberatelyavoidsexcessivedetail.

Suppliersareencouragedtorespondfullytothequestions.Theintentofthequestionnaireistopromoteanopenandconstructivedialoguebetweensuppliersandcustomersregardingbestpracticesinthemanagementofenvironmentalandsocialresponsibility.Anhonestandtransparentsupplierself-assessmentrepresentsafirststeptowardworkingwithcustomerstoimprovemanagementsystemsandoverallperformance.Supplierswillbeexpectedtodemonstratetheircontinuousimprovementthroughperiodicupdatesoftheon-linequestionnaire,basedonascheduletobeestablishedwiththeircustomers.
