Inadditiontoworryingaboutrisingglobaltemperaturesandmoreextremeweatherconditions,scientistsarecloselyarecloselymonitoringsealevelsaroundtheworld.Theseareslowlyrising,asthenorthernandsouthernpolaricecapsstarttomelt.Thiswillhaveseriousconsequencesforlow-lyingcountriesnearthesea,suchasthecoralislandsinthePacific,andBangladeshwheretheRiverGangesalreadyfloodsthedeltaeveryyear.Alreadypartsoftheseplacesaredisappearingundertherisingtides.

Accordingtonewresearch,onecontradictoryfeatureofglobalwarmingisthatitwillprobablyleadintheendtoaperiodofmuchcolderweather,atleastinEurope.Scientistsbasetheirtheoryonwhathappenedthelasttimetheworldwarmedup,8,300yearsago.TheyhavediscoveredthatwhentheicemeltedfromthenorthernpolaricecapitbecametrappedinanenormouslakeinnorthernCanada.Asmoreicemeltedthislakesuddenlyburstopen,releasingmillionsoftonsoffreezingfreshwaterintotheNorthAtlantic.ThisfloodofwaterwassolargethatitpreventedthenormalflowofwaterintheAtlantic,whichtakeswarmwaterfromthetropicsnorthtoEurope.Whenthisflowofwarmwaterwascutoff,temperaturesinEuropedroppedbybetweenthreeandeightdegreesCelsiusoverthenexttwohundredyears.ScientistsbelievethatasimilarprocesscouldoccurinthenextcenturyiftheGreenlandIceSheetstartstomelt.“Ultimately,that’stheinteresthere,”saysRichardAlley,anAmericanclimateexpert.“Theclimatehasn’tvariedmuchin8,000years.Butthebigchangescouldcomeback!
