“Anoldman,ayoungman,andlife’sgreatestlesson.”Thissentencefromthecover
ofabooknamedTuesdayswithMorriewhichwaswrittenbyMitchAlbom.Thenovelmakesmefeelcurious.ThestoryisaboutanoldprofessorMorriefoundhegotaseriousillnessandwoulddied.HeappointedwithhisstudentMitchtohavelife’slessoneveryTuesdayuntilMorriedie.Morriesaid:
“Nogradesweregiven,buttherewereoralexamseachweek.Youwereexpectedtorespondtoquestions,andyouwereexpectedtoposequestionsofyourown……Nobookswererequired,yetmanytopicswerecovered,includinglove,work,community,family,death……”(Albom,1)Morriesaidinaplacid,genial,andfacetiousvoice.Healwaystalkaboutdeathinapeacemood,whichattitudeshouldbeadmired.
Everyoneshouldlovetheirlife.Morriegaveanimageaboutperfectday.
“Whatifyouhadonedayperfectlyhealthy,Iasked?
Whatwouldyoudo?
‘Twenty-fourhours?
’
Twenty-fourhours.
‘Let’ssee……I’dgetupinthemorning,domyexercises,havealovelybreakfastofsweetrollsandtea,goforaswim,thenhavemyfriendscomeoverforanicelunch.I’dhavethemcomeoneortwoatatimesowecouldtalkabouttheirfamilies,theirissues,talkabouthowmuchwemeantoeachother.
ThenI’dliketogetforawalk,inagardenwithsometrees,watchtheircolors,watchthebirds,takeinthenaturethatIhaven’tseeninsolongnow.
Intheevening,we’dallgotogethertoarestaurantwithsomegreatpasta,maybesomeduck---Iloveduck---andthenwe’ddancetherestofthenight.I’ddancewithallthewonderfuldancepartnersoutthere,untilIwasexhausted.AndthenI’dgohomeandhaveadeep,wonderfulsleep.’

‘That’sit.’”(Albom,175--176)Itisasimpleday,simplelifestyle,butmostofpeopleunwillingtodothat.Everydaywillhavefun,ifsomeonebelieve.Well,havealunchwithfamiliesorfriends,itdoesn’thardtodo.Theydon’tmindthecookingstyle,theycareabouttheloveandthewarming atmosphere.Whenapersonistired,heshouldlookatthesky,walkinafield,andgetthefreshair,hewillfeelrelaxed.Whetherhappyornot,danceforoneselfuntilexhausted,don’tcareaboutwhoselaughing,andthenhaveagreatsleep.Whynot?
Itcanbeaperfectday.
Morriefaceddeathpeacefully.Becauseofdeterioratedcondition,Morrielosthisabilityonprovidedhimself,suchasturnedoverhisbodyonthebedatnight,adjustedthesittingpositionfromtimetotimebyhimself,eatingandsoon.Allofthesethingsneededtodependonhisfamily.WholebodyofMorriewereamyotrophygradually.Atthefinalperiodofhim,helookedathismuscularatrophyanddidnothing.However,Morriesaid:
“It’slikegoingbacktobeingachildagain.Someonetobatheyou,someonetoliftyou,someonetowipeyou.Weallknowhowtobeachild.It’sinsideallofus.Forme,it’sjustrememberinghowtoenjoyit.”(Albom,116)Yes,healwaysspecialandoptimistic,hiswordsreallyamazing.
Loveispowerful.Morriesaid:
“Aslongaswecanloveeachother,andrememberthefellingoflovewehad,wecandiewithouteverreallygoingaway.Alltheloveyoucreatedisstillthere.Allthememoriesarestillthere.Youliveon---intheheartsofeveryoneyouhavetouchedandnurturedwhileyouwerehere.”(Albom,174)AlthoughMorriehadbeendied,thelessonnevercancel.
Inconclusion,therearetwomainreasonsthatMorriehadpositivethinking.Forone,heenjoythelovewhichwasgivenbyhisfamily.Morriesaid:
“Ibegantoenjoymydependency.”(Albom,116)Fortwo,Morriethinkedeverydaywouldbeperfectday.
Hesaid:
“Learnhowtodie,andyoulearnhowtolive.”(Albom,83)Morriealwaystellpeoplelotsofbrilliantideas.“MitchAlbom’sbookisagifttomankind.---Philadelphia”Everyonewhoreadthisbookgaveitahighmark,soitisworthtoread.
