HavingbeenthetemporarydwellingplaceforbothEmperorKangxiandEmperorQiantongoftheQingDynastyduringtheirtriptoSouthChina,thisgardenwasreputedas“TemporaryImperialPalaceoftheWestLake.”In1927,itwasrenamedtocommemorateDr.SunYat-sen.
CranePavilion
LocatedatthenortheastfootoftheSolitaryMountain,thepavilionwasbuiltintheYuanDynastyandrebuiltin1915tocommemorateLinHejing,areclusivepoetoftheNorthernSongDynasty.Highlightshereincludeitsdouble-eave-coveredroofandtombofLinHejing.
WenlangLibrary
Builtinthe1782(47thyearduringthereignofEmperorQianlongoftheQingDynasty)andreconstructedin1880(6thyearduringregionofEmperorGuangxuoftheQingDynasty),thislibrary,asamajorhistoricalculturalsite,isnowunderstateprotectionboastsitsmostpreciouscollectionSiKuQuanShu(ImperialCollectionofFour),ahugeserialbookswithmorethan36000volumeswhichwascompletedin1787.
BaiCauseway
AdjacenttotheBrokenBridgeontheeastandtheSolitaryMountainonthewest,BaiCausewaynamedafterBaiJuyi(772-846),afamousandtaishou(aprefecturechiefinfeudalChina)ofHangzhouintheTangDynastyhadthecausewaybuilt,itboaststheoldestdykeoftheWestLakeandhasgonethroughdifferentnamessuchasSolitaryMountainRoadintheSouthernSongDynastyandShijinCausewayinthelateMingDynasty.
Mid-LakePavilion
Beingoneofthethreeman-madeislesintheWestLake,theisleisfamousforapavilionwithdoubleeaves,Xieshanroofandrowsofglasstiles.ItwasoriginallycalledCranePavilionwhencompleteinthereignofJiajingoftheMingDynasty,butchangedtoMid-lakePavilionbecauseofitslocationintheWestLake.“PeacefulSightsintheCenteroftheLake”waslistedasoneoftheeighteenscenicsightsoftheWestLakeintheQingDynastyandwasrebuiltlaterin1953.

LocatedatthenorthernbankoftheWestLakeandadjacenttothepreciousStoneMountainontheeast,GeMountainfeaturesitsgeologicalstructureofvolcanictuff,whichdistinguishesitfromanyothermountainsaroundtheWestLake.LegendgoesthatintheEasternJindynastyaTaoistmasterbythenameGeHongusedtolivearecluselifeontheMountainandsoughtwaysforelixir.TodaywecansstillseerelicsliketheplatformandwellwhereGeHongmadepillsofimmortalityandtheBaopuTaoistTemple,whichwasnamedafterhisTaoistname.
JadeSpring
JadeSpringcanbedatedbacktoasearlyastheQiDynasty(479-520).AsoneofthethreefamousspringsoftheWestLake,itenjoysthesamereputationasthatofFlowersHarborandgotlistedasoneoftheEighteenViewsoftheWestLakeintheQingDynasty.
ViewingPlumBlossomonLingfengMountain
LocatedonthenorthoftheWestLake,thisfeaturesbrilliantplumblossomofdifferentbreedsalloverthemountain.DuringtheWuyueStatethereusedtobeaLingfengBuddhistTemple,coveredbylushandgreentrees.StretchesofplumtreeswereplantedhereintheMingDynastyandplumplantationgotwidelypopularizedduringthereignsofEmperorDaoguangandEmperorXuantongofQingDynasty.Withaplantingareaof12hectaresandabout50varietiesofplums,ithasboastedafamousplaceforviewofplumsinfullblossomsincethe1980s.
Pine-tree-bankedAncientPath
IntersectingtheLingyinRoadandleadingtotheLingyinTemple,thispathfeaturestoweringpinetreesonbothsidesandcameintoaviewasearlyastheYuanDynasty.Since1950,morevarietiesofpinetree,suchasmassonpineandloblolly,andotherspecieslikemapleandazaleawereplantedalongthepath.
NorthPeak
Standing314meterhigh,NorthPeakisamountainofquartzitestructuresituatedonthenorthoftheLingyinTemple.BeforetheSongDynasty,thereusedtobeapagodaonthetopofthemountain,soaringintotheclouds,which,togetherwiththeSouthPeak,formedthenameTwinPeaksPiercingtheClouds.Inthelastfewyears,aTVtowerandacableway(theonlyoneoftheWestLakearea)havesuccessivelybeensetup.ApoemtabletisalsoerectedwithChairmanMao’sClimbinguptheNorthPeak.
BeishanStreet
Extending2600meterslongfromtheBrokenBridgetoShuguangRoad,BeishanStreetistheonlyhistoricalandculturalstreetintheWestLakeScenicZoneandhasbeenreputedas“amuseumwithoutwalls.”Takingastrollalongthestreet,youcanmeethistoricalandculturalrelicsatanymoment.Thehighlighthereisthedistinctivebuildings.TheWestLakeExpoMuseum,whichwasopenedtothepubliconDecember1,2003,displaystheproductsfromtheWestLakeExpoof1929andtheexposafter1999.BodhiMonasterybuiltin1926featuresitsdelicategatetower.OtherhighlightsincludeBittsoftheFirstEmperoroftheQinDynasty,ManaoTemple,ZhangJingjiang’sFormerResidence,etc.

LocatedintheLakesidePark,thisviewusedtobeoneoftheEighteenScenicSpotsoftheWestLakeintheQingDynasty,whenGovernorLiWeihadapavilionbuiltandgiventhenameJixianPavilion(gatheringthewitandwisdom).TheplaceisalsocalledPavilionBayforit’ssurroundbywindingstreams.OffspringofBaQi(“EightBanner”oftheManNationalityintheQingDynasty)usedtopractiseridingandarcheryhere.
ChengLu
UsedtobethevillaofShengEnyi(the4thsonofShengXuanhuai,agiantindustrialistandoneofthefirstcapitalistsofChina),thishousewitnessedthesecondnegotiationbetweenCommunistPartyandnationalistChinain1937.Later,JiangJieshi(aChinesemilitaryandpoliticalfigurewholedtheNationalistsagainsttherisingCommunistforcesandwasdrivenfromthemainlandtoTaiwan(1949),whereheservedaspresidentofNationalistChinauntilhisdeath.)andSongMeilingspenttheirhoneymoonhere.
YongjinPool(GoldGushingPool)
LegendgoesthatitisQianYuanguan,emperoroftheWuyueState,thathadhispooldredgedandaface-liftwasgiventoitlater.ThepoolfeaturessculpturesofagoldenoxandZhangShun(oneoftheheroesinHeroesoftheMarshes,oneoftheChineseLiterarymasterpieces)gushingfromthewater.TheYongjinBuildingnearthepoolwasbuiltduringthereignofEmperorZhengheoftheNorthernSongDynastyand,intheSouthernSongDynasty,wastheveryplacewherecelebrationbanquetswereheldforthesuccessfulcandidatesinthehighestimperialexaminations.
EmperorQian’sTemple
OriginallynamedBiaozhongTemple,itwasbuiltinthenameofthefiveemperorsoftheWuyueState,allsurnamedQian.Memorialarchwaysweresetupalongthepavedpathleadingtothetemple,implyingthegreatcontributionsofthefiveemperorstotheWuyueState.Attheendofthepaththereisastatueandinfrontofthegatetherestandsacommercialarchwayofmeritsandvirtuesnamed“GongDeChongFang”dedicatedtoEmperorQianLiu’smemory.
