In2006,forexample,scientistsstudied2,800womenwhohadcancer.Theyfoundthatthosewhohadfewfriendsorfamilywerefivetimesmorelikelytodieoftheirdiseasethanwomenwithmanysocialcontacts.Also,evenhealthypeoplehadabetterchanceoffallingilliftheyfeltleftoutbyothers,accordingtotheBBC.

Theresultshavescientiststhinkingthatlonelinessmighthurttheimmunesystem（免疫系统）,whichprotectsthebodyfromdiseases.

Hopingtoprovethistheory,Jaremkaandherresearchteamputvolunteers（志愿者）throughastresstest.Duringthetest,volunteerswereaskedtomakeanunpreparedspeechinfrontofagroupofstony-facedpeople.Theresearchersfoundthatvolunteerswhosaidtheywerelonelyintheirdailylivesfeltmorestressduringthetest.Andtheirbloodsamplesshowedthatallthestresshadmanagedtocauseharmfulchangestotheirimmunesystem.
