Inthesurvey,theseolderadultswereaskedtolistuptofiveoftheirclosestfriends,describeindetailthenatureofeachrelationship,andindicatehowclosetheyfelttoeachperson.Notincludingspouses(配偶),theaveragenumberofclosefriendswas2.91,andmostolderadultssensedhighlevelsofsupportfromtheirsocialcontacts.Additionally,mostrespondentsweremarried,ingoodphysicalhealth,andreportednotbeingverylonely.

Iveniukandco-authorL.PhilipSchumm,aseniorbiostaticianattheUniversityofChicago,foundthatolderadultswhoreportedfeeling“extremelyclose”onaveragetothefamilymemberstheylistedasamongtheirclosestfriendshadaboutasixpercentriskofmortalitywithinthenextfiveyears,comparedtoapproximatelya14percentriskofmortalityamongthosewhoreportedfeeling“notveryclose”tothefamilymemberstheylisted.

Furthermore,thestudyfoundthatrespondentswholistedmorefamilymembersintheirnetwork–regardlessofcloseness–hadlowerrisksofdeathcomparedtothosewholistedfewerfamilymembers.“Regardlessoftheemotionalcontentofaconnection,simplyhavingasocialrelationshipwithanotherpersonmayhavebenefitsforlongevity(长寿),”Iveniuksaid.

Iveniuksaidhewassurprisedthatfeelingclosertoone’sfamilymembersandhavingmorerelativesasclosefriendsdecreasedtheriskofdeathforolderadults,butthatthesamewasnottrueofrelationshipswithfriends.
