withonthattrainhometodelaware,thevicepresident-electoftheunitedstates,

iwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybesttomycampaignmanagerdavidplouffe,mychiefstrategistdavidaxelrod,andthe

bestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpolitics-youmadethishappen,

andiamforevergratefulforwhatyouvesacrificedtogetitdone.butaboveall,iwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongsto-itbelongs

iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuch

moneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington

-itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthe

frontporchesofcharleston.itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhad

togivefivedollarsandtendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.itgrewstrength

fromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathy;

wholeft

theirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep;

from

thenot-so-youngpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockon

thedoorsofperfectstrangers;

fromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteered,and

organized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agovernmentofthepeople,

bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromthisearth.thisisyourvictory.

iknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelectionandiknowyoudidntdoitfor

me.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.for

evenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringare

thegreatestofourlifetime-twowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisis

inacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswaking

upinthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesfor

us.therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleep

andwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgage,orpaytheirdoctorsbills,orsaveenough

forcollege.thereisnewenergytoharnessandnewjobstobecreated;

newschools

tobuildandthreatstomeetandalliancestorepair.theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgettherein

oneyearorevenoneterm,butamerica-ihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniam

tonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyou-weasapeoplewillgetthere.therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewithevery

decisionorpolicyimakeaspresident,andweknowthatgovernmentcantsolveevery

problem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwill

listentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.andaboveall,iwillaskyoujoinin

theworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafortwo-hundred

andtwenty-oneyears-blockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycalloused

hand.

autumnnight.thisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseek-itisonlythechance

asonepeople.letusresistthetemptationtofallbackonthesamepartisanshipandpettiness

andimmaturitythathaspoisonedourpoliticsforsolong.letusrememberthatit

wasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanneroftherepublicanpartyto

thewhitehouse-apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-reliance,individualliberty,

andnationalunity.thosearevaluesweallshare,andwhilethedemocraticparty

haswonagreatvictorytonight,wedosowithameasureofhumilityanddetermination

tohealthedividesthathaveheldbackourprogress.aslincolnsaidtoanationfarmore

dividedthanours,wearenotenemies,butfriends...thoughpassionmayhavestrained

itmustnotbreakourbondsofaffection.andtothoseamericanswhosesupportihave

yettoearn-imaynothavewonyourvote,butihearyourvoices,ineedyourhelp,
