MycolleaguesandIstartedourresearchbasedonthatlackofsleepcanincreasenegativeresponsestotheinfraction.Sleep-lackingpeoplearemorelikelytointerpretanactioninanegativemanner.Thissuggeststhatpeo

plewillconductinfractionsmorenegativelywhenthey’resleep-lacking.Inaddition,lackofsleepmakesitmoredifficulttoregulatenegativeemotions.Thiscanmakepeoplemorelikelytobecomeangry,makingtheminturnmorelikelytorespondnegativelytopeoplewhoengageinpunishablebehaviors.Weassumethatsleep-lackingpeoplewouldbemorelikelytogiveharsherpunishments.

Basedonthisfinding,ouradvicetomanagersistobeawareofthispotentialeffectonyourjudgment.Ifastaffengagesinapunishableinfractionafteryou’vehadashortnightofsleep,youmayallocateapunishmentthatisharsherthannecessary,contributingtoanunfairworkenvironment.
