Abstract
Agreatamountofresearcheshavebeencontributedeithertotranslationsofliterary
andphilosophicalworksortodistinguishedtranslatorsinthelateQingDynasty.The
politicalandeconomicaltranslationsreceivelittleattentionfromtheresearchers.In
addition,rendering,animportantfeatureofthetranslationsinthelateQingDynasty,is
shortoffurtherexploration.ZuoZhiChuYanintroduceswesternpoliticaleconomicsand
generatesasignificantinfluenceonthesociety.AndZuopresentsafeatureoflocalized
rendering.However,researchesonZuoarenearlydismissedinthefieldoftranslation
studiesandarelargelyscatteredinhistoricalorsociologicalwritingsHence,aimedatanintensivestudyofZuo,thisthesisisdonetoconducta
descriptiveresearchonthelocalizedrenderingofpolitical,
economicandsocialthoughts
inZuofromtheperspectivesofrewritingtheory,toanalyzethereasons,methodsand
purposesoflocalizedrendering.Theresearchresultsshowthatinfluencedbythelocal
ideology,poeticsandpatronage,translatorsmakeuseofChineselocalpolitical,
economicandsocialthoughtstoelaboratethepoliticaleconomicthoughtsofwestern
liberalism,gettingZuotopresentafeatureoflocalizedrendering.Throughlocalized
rendering,ZuoisfarmoreacceptabletoChineselocalreaders.Butregretfullyatthe
sametime,itfailstoconveyfaithfullythecontentoftheoriginaltextThemainconclusionsdrawnfromthisresearcharethatinthebeginningof
importingforeignknowledgethroughtranslation,translatorscanapplylocalresources,
whichisconductivetothesuccessofthetranslations.Furthermore,intheprocessof
translating,translatorsmusthaveagoodknowledgeofthedifferencesbetweenthe
sourcelanguageandcultureandthereceivinglanguageandculture.
Onlyinthiswaycan
translatorsconveyaccuratelytheoriginalandreceivefavorable
responsefromthetarget

摘要
晚清的文学和哲学作品的翻译以及著名的译者一直是国内众多研究者关注的
焦点。
而政治经济学领域的翻译却鲜有人问津。
此外,作为晚清翻译的一大特点的
本土化译述也缺乏深度探究。
《佐治刍言》是一本介绍西方政治经济学的翻译作品,
对晚清社会产生了重要影响,其本土化译述特点十分明显。
然而,现有对该书的研
究大多散见于历史学、社会学学者撰写的晚清西学东渐相关著作,具体的翻译研究
并不多见。
鉴于此,本文以翻译改写理论为指导,采用描述性研究方法,关注其政治思想、
经济思想、社会思想呈现本土化译述的原因,方法以及目的。
研究结果显示,在论
述西方自由主义政治经济思想时,由于受到本土意识形态、诗学以及赞助人的影响,
译者联想中国本土政治思想,经济思想以及社会思想来重新解释原文,使《佐》呈
现出本土化译述的特点。
通过本土化译述,《佐》在很短时间内得到读者的认可,
但是没有准确地表现出原文的语言特色和内容。
本文得出结论,在通过翻译输入外来知识之初,译者可以利用本土资源,对译
本进行本土化译述,使译本更容易被读者接受。
此外,在实际翻译过程中,译者须
深谙源语语言和文化与译入语语言和文化之间的差异,以此来准确传达原文并获得
译入语读者的认可。

1.1ResearchBackground
SincewesterntranslationtheorieswereintroducedintoChina,moreresearcheshave
beendevotedtothestudyoftranslationsinthelateQingDynasty,forwesterntheories
providesufficienttheoreticalsupportforthestudyofmanyinterestingphenomenaofthe
translations.However,themajorityofthoughtfulresearchesfocusoneithertranslations
ofgreatlyinfluentialliteraryandphilosophicalworks,ordistinguishedtranslators.Asa
result,otherimportanttranslationshavelongbeenoverlooked,onesofpoliticsand
economicsinparticularInaddition,thetranslationsinthelateQingDynastyarenottotalincorrespondence
withtheoriginalsonthelexical,syntacticoreventextuallevel.Thetranslations,ina
largepart,simplyrenderthemainideasoftheoriginals.Thetranslationmethodis
consideredasadapting,rendering,rewriting,addingandsoon.Butmostofinfluential
researchersholdthetranslationmethodtoberendering,suchasHuangZhonglianwho

developshis“bianyi”theoryonthebaseofrenderinganddefinesrenderingas
“translatorsreportingthemainorpartialideasofanoriginalwiththeirownlanguage”

thelateQingDynasty1998:

56.Thus,thispaperdefinesthetranslationmethodinthelateQing
Dynastyasrenderingandmakesafurtheranalysisoftherenderingphenomenon
ArepresentativecaseisZuoZhiChuYan,《佐治刍言》,atranslation
whichmakesasignificantinfluenceonthesocietyinthelateQingDynasty.However,thereare
fewin-depthresearchesonZuotheabbreviationforZuoZhiChuYan,especiallyonits
translationproblem.Zuowastranslatedin1885forthefirsttimebyJohnFryer,an
Englishmissionary,andYingZuxi,astudentfromtheTranslationDepartmentofthe
HuangZhonglianregardsrenderingasanimportantmethodof“bianyi”
变译1JiangnanManufacturingBureauwhichpatronizesthetranslationofZuo.Theanalysisof
Zuo,willbecontributedtotheexplorationofpatron’sinfluenceonthetranslationofZuo,
andChinese’viewsonandcomprehensionofwesternlearningintheperiodof
WesternizationMovement
Zuoisoneoftheearliestworksintroducingwesternpoliticalandeconomicthoughts
inthelateQingDynasty,whichbychanceconformstoChinesesocialsituation:
finding
theroadsto“self-improvement”and“prosperity”.Itspopularityhasbeentestifiedinan
all-roundappreciationfromofficialsandacademiccelebritiestocommonpeopleever
sinceitwaspublished,especiallyaftertheSin-JapaneseWar1894-1895.Thus,the
