TheCambridgeScienceFestival(CSF)ispleasedtoinformyouofthesixthannualCuriositychallengeinvites,evendaresschoolstudentsbetweentheagesof5and14tocreateartworkorapieceofwritingthatshowstheircuriosityandhowitinspiresthemtoexploretheirworld.
Studentsarebeingdaredtodrawapicture,writeanarticle,takeaphotoorwriteapoemthatshowswhattheyarecuriousenterthechallenge,allartworkorpiecesofwritingshouldbesenttotheCambridgeScienceFestiva,lMITMuseum,265MassAvenue,Cambridge02139byFriday,February8th.
StudentswhoentertheCuriosityChallengeandareselectedaswinnerswillbehonoredataspecialceremonyduringtheCSFonSunda,yAprilspeakerswillalsopresentprizestotheentrieswillbepublishedinaentrieswillbeexhibitedandprizeswillbeofthosewhotakepartwillbeincludedinthecelebrationandbrunchwillbeserved.

Itwascalculatedthatwhenitspopulationreacheditshighestpoin,thereweremorethan3billionpassengerpigeon—anumberequalto24to40percentofthetotalbirdpopulationintheUnitedStates,makingitperhapsthemostabundantbirdintheaslateas1870whentheirnumbershadalreadybecomesmalleaflockbelievedtobe1milewideand320miles(about515kilometers)longwasseennearCincinnati.Sadly,theabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoinWherethebirdsweremostabundan,peoplebelievedtherewasanever—lastingsupplyandkilledthembythehuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrainwaiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,takinghundredsatabirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.
Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassengerpigeonsnestedhadbeendamagedbyAmericans'
needfwhwbcfflbattered(驱
散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarthernorth,wherecoldtemperaturesandspringstormscontributedtotheirthegreatflocksweregonenevertobeseenagain.In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassenger
pigeons,butbythen,nosizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10lastconfirmedwildpigeonintheUnitedStateswasshotbyaboyinPikeCount,yOhio,inatime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhumanlastofthem,knownaffectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardenonSeptember,11914.
