“Everyonewhospeaksitshapesit,〞wrotethenewspaper.

Forexample,inSinglish,youcaneasilyrecognizeinfluencesfromChinese,includingvocabularysuchas〞MeeSiam〞and“dabao〞.Sentencestructureslike〞toiletwhere〞insteadof“where’sthetoilet〞alsocomefromChinese.

Interestinganddiverseasitmayseem,thetrendforSinglishisworryingSingapore’sgovernment.Itisconcernedthatthedialectisloweringthecountry’sEnglishstandardandmayaffectitsrelationshipwithvisitors.ItevenstartedtheSpeakGoodEnglishMovement.

Unfortunately,theproblemwasnotsolved.Instead,Singlishhasboomed,especiallyamongyoungpeoplewhothinkofitasasignofbeingcoolandawayofidentifyingthemselvesasSingaporean.

ButthisdoesnotmeanthatstandardEnglishisbeingabandonedbyyoungpeople.Infact,theyaremuchmorecapablethanthegovernmentgivescredit--theycanspeakboth.

Thebigtechcompanieswillhavetoworkouthowtorespondtothisnewgenerationofquitters.Facebookisthefirsttogopublicwithitsattempt,hopingitsrecentmovecanmakethesocialnetworkmorehomely.

Lastyearthetechindustrygotabadname-BigTech-withunfortunateechoesofotherindustriesthathavefacedfierceopposition,includingBigTobacco.Likethem,thetechindustryhastoreduceconcernfromanewgenerationofactivistshareholders(股东)thatarequestioningitsroleintheworld.ThesecampaignsareneverasfierceasthosefacedbyBigTobacco.Inthe1990s,sociallyresponsibleinvestorsrefusedtoputmoneyintobaccostocks.

ItisfardifficultforinvestorstochallengeBigTechandhardtoseparatethegoodthesecompaniesdointheworld--connectingoldfriendsandgivingspaceforpeopletosharetheirideas--fromthebad.Inthemeantime,stoppingusingtechnologyremainsproblematic.InTheWorldWithoutMind:
